i have a 90 passat with 16v and it leaks oil somewhere, it drips from the rear of the block, the rear of the block is wet with oil, so i put a new valve cover gasket in and seems like it did not help at all, i check all along the valve cover on the back with a mirror and can not see any oil coming out and is very dry, then when i crawl under the thing the back of the block is soaked mainly on the cam pulley side, the only thing i can thing of is its coming out of the head gasket, but that does not make any sense to me, the cam,intermediate shaft and crank seal are all dry around them, it makes no sense, any one out there see something like this before? if so please give me some insight, oil does not do me much good on the ground. im about to pull the engine and reseal it top to bottom, thanks for anything

there is a special dye you can add to your oil, its the easiest way to find leaks. i havnt done it myself but have heard of many shops that find leaks this way.
another good thing to do is clean the crap outta the whole engine with brake clean an degreaser than go drive an imediatly check out the motor again.

parts stores-----specific to engine oil-----at my job we have the dye for eng oil,trans,ac,etc-----but we use a black light and yellow lens glasses to really pinpoint the dye----most of your run of the mill parts stores can get it though
