there is a notch i the pully (for the camshaft i believe and that is lined up with the other notch on the engine itself. This means the engine is at top dead center correct

yes sir. i have done almost eveyrthing else without help. and have been using hte diy. not bad considering the only other thing i have done was the clutch
its been awhile since i last did mine, but from memory if the mark on the cam lines up with the one on the pulley and the same for the crank, then you have them lined up-----after that turn the crank by hand to see if you feel anything binding
