Re: is my shock gonna die soon (99vwbeetle)

Yes. Start building a little coffin.
(Not sure...leaking shocks are something I usually don't play around with and replace at the earliest opportunity just to avoid taking chances.)

Doesn't look too good. I'd probably replace the pair of them if I had the cash on hand.

fixed.

Your mechanic is probably is probably not horribly wrong. A leaking shock isn't grounds for all out panic, like you can't drive the car or anything. What that means is that you need to consider getting new shocks in the next few months. The question is how the car feels right now. I had rear shocks go in my fox. It wasn't all that fun as the rear of the car would snap oversteer very easily. So yeah, it needs to get done. But if your car still feels like stock, you got time.
When you notice the handling start to deteriorate, it's that time to replace them. If you got the coin on hand now, just get it done. If you need to save for a couple months (provided the car drives normally) you should be ok. And yeah, when you replace them, replace at least the shock on the other side. If not all 4. Heck, you can get some bilstein sport shocks and sport springs and have an excuse to lower it a little.

This may sound really stupid, but I'm almost positive that when I worked at the vw dealer a tech told me once that the shocks on ( newer ) vw's were warranted for life. I don't believe it and have never seen anything like this on paper but I swear they said it.
Anyone know?

This is actually in the rear. Jacked up the other side of the car and found that it is leaking also, pretty much exactly the same amount as the other side.
If I still got a couple weeks on them then i'll shop around at some auto wreckers or maybe i'll buy a used OEM shock from someone who upgraded their suspension.

Save a couple of months to buy Beetle shocks? How do you pay for gas?
I say replace it. The fluid inside the shock is what provides the dampening, if it is leaking out it isn't doing it's job.

Replacing the rear shocks on a new beetle seriously takes about 15min per side. I think theres three bolts involved.

Yeah. I was looking at the pic and was thinking "Well- it; snot a McPherson strut, so all you have to do is jack the car up, take off the wheel, support the hub with another jack, remove the shock bolts, remove shock, install new, shock, add bolts, put wheel back on.
The shocks going bad won;t make the car fly off the road, but it will allow uneven tire wear. So it really does make financial sense to replace them as soon as possible.

That is not a Beetle, unless it is an RSI, as it has driveshafts in the rear.

Discovered this while rotating my tires. My car has 45K miles on it.
I asked one mechanic and he said that if it doesn't leak ALOT then it should be fine.
Would like some input on what to do

I don't know....REPLACE THEM? I swear the threads here are getting more and more useless by the day.
Hey I need some advice, maybe i'll start a thread about it: my car is on a quarter of a tank and I am down 1/2 a quart. What should I do?
