The PS pump is at the back of the engine and the WP at the front, why do you need to take it off?

you should be able to remove the thermostat outlet without removing the p/s pump just have to finagle it a little http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

On my 1991 GTI 8-valve with power steering, the ps pump and the housing occlude the thermostat housing...the design is stupid.

on the 8v you have to remove the PS pump to get to the thermostat. There should be about 4 bolts holding it on, look around.

And how do you go about doing that? I was loosening all kinds of bolts and got no where...
I appreciate the help.

no. just loosen the tension, pull the bracket and pump as one piece

Maybe on a Diesel? Not on a regular 8V or 16V... (+1 drunken post for me)

On the diesel it has to come off.
On mine I removed the pivot bolt, one of the locking bolts, and the tensioner bolt. Then the front half of the bracket and the pump just drop out of the way. This will also show you where the "hidden" bolt is.

Thats what I thought... what bolts are involved?

I just take the bracket out. You can leave the PS pump mounted to get to the thermostat.

Re: Need to replace thermostat... How do I remove the power steering pump? (lambchop_40)

Remove the two long bolts (one longer than the other) from the bottom that fastens the cast aluminum bracket. You'll have to loosen the tension from the belt first. Then the whole bracket/pump assembly can swing about the top pivot. Loosen the top pivot, take out the horizontal loooong bolt and the whole thing comes free. Just hang the pump on the side with a coat hanger and work on the t-stat housing.

Dammit people!
Don't stop at the best part!
How do you do that?
I'm about to do the same thing with my 16v.
Stupid PS... it's stupid, it's for *******, it costs power and it's a hassle when you gotta work on the car. Damn things brake every two miles and it makes the engine compartment look even MOAR crowded!
