I just got a 1987 cabriolet parts car and it has power steering and cruise control, it has the 8v gas motor and 5 speed tranny, well, I want to convert my 82 jetta diesel to the power steering set up, everything is there to do it with, but will this fit my diesel engine, bolt right on, or are there some changes from those years and engine blocks. and, is it really worth the trouble, I am going to have the engine out of the jetta sometime this fall to swap in a new one, any thoughts on it would help, thanks

Re: is power steering on a 82 jetta 1.6 n/a diesel possible ? (antichristonwheels)

Thanks, I looked at the parts today, I will pull the rack linkage, pump and lines off tomorrow along with the oil cooler after work then take the rest to the junk yard, that is if nobody else wants the rest of it.

you'll need a alt bracket from a mk2. The cabby one will not work on the diesel and the diesel one does not have the provisioning for the PS bracket. All mk2 brackets have it though IIRC

well, so its not just a bolt on swap then, lucky for me I have a 1992 jetta gl that may have this bracket on it, I will see about it tomorrow, I am thinking this may be more work then what it is worth,

not a bolt on for an 80 steering setup at least.
obviously the rack bolts right up no problems. the problem for me came in mating the steering column to the rack - the power steering rack has a larger sized piece that joins to hte bottom of the universal on the steering column and would not mate up to my non-power steering universal.
I scrapped it and pulled a non-power rack from an ~83 rabbit at the yard - hoping this one will bolt in, wish I could find my original non-power rack...

yep, after thinking about it overnight and all day and from what you guys have described I have decided not to mess with the power steering conversion, besides it drives just fine the way it is although the gf doesnt think so, Thanks for all the info tho, I have learned something new about my A1 from it.,
