After reading several posts about the green coolant temp sensor I decided to update the one in my daughters 98 Beetle (2.0L). It turns out that the green sensor does not have the same connector as the original. The new sensor has smaller more recessed pins than the original. Is there a different version of the “green” sensor? I told the parts guy it was a 98 beetle with a 2 liter and he said they were all the same. I think I got there too close to closing time….

Welcome to my world!
Volkswagen likes to do stuff like that. They like to mix things from different generations of cars when they are transitioning. You will notice that half of the electrical connectors in your engine bay are MK3 style and the other half are MK4 style!
I got the same rubbish here!
