Re: "Kick Down" a totally new feature for the '03 VR6? (RodColeman)

Today while driving my car I floored it, then pressed harder, and there was NOTHING. I pressed it pretty hard and nothing happened.... it dropped a gear before I hit the floor.

I don't understand how this would work. In my automatic 1.8t if I floor it the rpms will get up in the 6 or seven range. If the car were to downshift wouldn't it go way past the redline, and wouldn't that be bad.

Ok to clear a few things up, every automatic car "kicks down" however the kick down switch is an entirely new thing. An ex girlfriends moms X5 had this featuer, there was a physical switch setup with the pedal. You could hear it click and all.
If VW added a kick down switch this is entirely new and no VW EVER had it before. The kick down you all are referring to is computer controlled based on throttle position, rpm and load. A switch is an entirely different, and for hte most part would ignore those 3 items, unless of course the next lower gear is going to put the motor pasts its mechanical limits.
the black think you all are referring to is in no way a swtich, its just a stopper under the pedal its on every car.

What!?! Are you high? The kick-down switch has been a feature of automatic transmissions on every brand of car for a long, long time.
On our Jetta, it's mounted to the back of the accelerator pedal (as opposed to the grey plastic stop mounted to the floor underneath the pedal).
On our Passat, it's integral to the pedal mechanism (meaning it's out of sight), also as opposed to the grey plastic stop mounted to the floor underneath the pedal.
A switch doesn't need to click to be a switch...

"Kick-down device
The kick-down device gives maximum acceleration when the accelerator pedal is pressed down past the full throttle position. Depending on the road speed and engine speed, the upshift is either delayed (forced throttle) or the transmission changes down into the next lower gear"
from my 2001 GTI manual.

No I am ont HIGH therei s no physically switch, its computer based just for kick down like there is now. The feature has been there, not the switch.
I have worked on more VWs in the last week then you will drive in your life.

right, device, and my manual calls it a range, not a switch, its based on TP, what hty are referrign to in the new cars is a physical switch that willl 99% of the time downshift the trans. Go drive a car with this switch, and one with "kick down" an dyou will clearly see the difference.

Re: "Kick Down" a totally new feature for the '03 VR6? (RodColeman)

My 380 SL had this. I guess it is a German thing. It worked but I thought of it as a last resort to get the car to move out, it would go from 4th to 2th or somtimes 1th, all depending on the speed.
Why would VW need this on a car with that much HP? I have driven the VR6 Autos and they are fine.
I guess they figure it needs it for some reason?

Re: "Kick Down" a totally new feature for the '03 VR6? (kyokoris)

My 96 passat glx had a kick down switch past the full throttle position. Flooring the throttle sometimes did not ensure the transmission would downshift (esp. at high speed), but that kickdown switch at the end always forced it to. So no, these things have been in vw automatics for some time.
