I got a big frickin' crack through my windshield on my 97 Golf. Anyway, I made some calls today. I got quotes from $145 to $400. My question to you: is there any reason to assume that a $145 is less superior than a more expensive one? I figured they were all the same. Am I wrong?

Nowadays they are all pretty much the same. I just spent $300 on mine...Lifetime warranty, installed, came to my work to do it, etc....Dunno if it was the best deal, but it worked for me...

i got mine replaced recently as well, through my insurance, cost me 10 deducatible, but when i signed the work order it said the cost of the windshield itself was just over $400cnd. And it's not OEM

My Uncle used to run a glass business.
I priced a replacement windshield (PPG) through him (installed) and MY family price was $256 CAN.
Bear in mind that he was running a small volume single outlet shop so his cost was higher than some of the big volume chains.
That said, most of these places have two prices. The one they charge you if you are paying for it yourself, and the one they quote the insurance company. Here in Ontario, windshield glass is just like any other insurance claim, and most glass shops offer to cover your deductable up to $300.
So when a guy gets a quote for $350 to replace the windshield, paying for it himself, you know that the glass shop isn't going to submit a bill for $350 to the insurance for the same job, when they have to eat $300 of it.

I was quoted around $600 for an OEM windshield for my 97 Jetta. The Aftermarket windshield I had installed was a lot cheaper. I have glass insurance, so the cost didn't reallly bother me, but the aftermarket windshield had a sunband at the top, whereas the OEM sheild they had available did not. My OEM didn't have one either, so I went ahead with the aftermarket.

quote:

thanks for the responses so far. Any reason why a cheap windshield would be a bad idea?

all windsheilds sold in the US have to be made to USDOT standards regardless of price.. mine is NOT OEM, but it was made in germany and upholds to all USDOT specifications..

i have the dots around the edges and the black circle for the rear view mirror and the bracket came mounted on the glass...

I only use factory glass cause there is a specific molding/casing around the edge of the glass. Most knock-offs us a cheap casing that look like s****. This insures proper fit and seal.. I usually pay 350 or so for Golf3 Jetta# replacements. I pay cost for the glass.. so using factory glass expect.. 400-450

they also have to be installed to oem specifications or they will not meet USDOT standards... so i am curious about this "molding/casing" do you mean the plastic or rubber surrounding the windscreen??
