Re: Just got the new C&D issue with the Phaeton write-up what do you think?? (I3oxrocket)

It means that its more of a luxo than a luxo-sport sedan. It can handle the twisty roads when needed too...but that was not focus of the engineering. The S-class is synomous with vault-like and solid build. It's a compliment and a dig at the same time. Meaning...come comparo time...all the mags...especially C&D favor handling in all of their sedans. The 7 series will win out...even though the build quality is crap. U should read some of the complaints in this weeks AutoWeek from some owners of the 7-series.
VW admits this....with the new Audi A8 more focused on the handling-sporty side of the equation.
Overall...I liked the article. It seems to be an issue filled with VW products. Both the luxo sedan and new suv. And autoweek loves the w8 Passat. Even added it to their long-term fleet of cars.

I've been reading good things about the W8, and expected the usual VW luxury bashing. Basically, everything I read says "the only 8-cyl German luxury car people can actually afford"

13.9 second in the 1/4 mile is faster than the new 350Z sports car from Nissan and in the same league as the Boxters and M3's. Infact it is quicker than even a stock E36 M3 in the 1/4 ... I've seen these run low to mid 14's.
Its no slouch for all the luxury ... I like VW coming up with such great cars. Hope these are as good when on the road as they sound on paper.

I took a test ride with my local dealer in a W8 Passat. That car is slick. If I had $38k, I'd definatly buy it. Cool, quiet, cumfy, nice sound system. Highway on-ramps just seem to disapper. One moment 35 mph, the next 75 mph. And that was with the 4 speed automatic. Beautiful. Orgasmic.

I thought it had a 5 speed auto. It should, all the other Passat's have 5 speed autos I think.

I work in a vw dealership so we are very exited for this car, the C&D article stated the price to $100,000, this isthe wrong price weare told no more than 80K . The bmw 7 is not worth the money. I have two friend selling the BMW and they say it tkaes 4 hours to go through the car on delivery.I will post some more information when we get it inthe dealership.

What caught my eye is the dashboard now has A/C vents. The cars that were unvieled at the autoshows had no visible dash vents. I find that very interesting. F. Pieche was quoted that he dispised airconditioning in cars as he hated drafts and the blast of air associated with the A/C system. He was said to like the Phaeton because the A/C worked without the drafty-blast coming from the vents! Compare this pic with the one in the latest issue of C&D.

Actually there are air vents on eeach side of the clock - they’re hidden when not in use
quote:

From http://www.vwvortex.com/news/03_02/03_04/page2.shtml:
The usual air vents visible at the front cannot in this case be seen; they are masked by covers finished in fine veneer. However, if for reasons of special climatic conditions a direct ventilation is necessary, this can be had in the front part, ensuring a fast heating-up or cooling-down. This direct air flow is only needed for short bursts, however; when a certain temperature has been reached, it is more important that the air be distributed indirectly, that is to say draught-free and not directed at the driver or front passenger. For this reason, once a defined condition has been reached, the new Climatronic immediately changes back to the indirect mode, the direct airflow vents closing automatically and being entirely masked by the veneered covers. What you have to remember is that these vents can open when necessary to reach the selected temperature quickly. You can also manually open the vents, which are hidden behind wooden panels.
