Re: How many people warm there car up for 2-5 minutes? (mnelson)

The engine warms much better and safer when under load and not idling. Also, all the other parts of your suspension, transmission and drive train will warm up as well the car is rolling. Just keep it under 2500rpms until the coolant temp needle is around the 190deg mark.

manual says to drive, not sit. In any event, cars were made for driving. The idea of sitting still in my driveway for 5 minutes every time I start would make me think I was in the toy ride in front of the Toys R Us.

Hmm, I guess the engines made now days are really made to start driving immeditally after startup. I've allways been told to let the engine warm up at idle for about 2 minutes and then to proceed to drive.

Re: How many people warm there car up for 2-5 minutes? (Patmsbca)

As per VW:
A warm up program determines shift characteristics and is activated when:

 • Fresh Start of the EngineEngine temp under 104°F

The warm up program lasts apporximately 40 seconds after shifting into drive and vehicle is moving under the above conditions.
During this period, the program holds the shift points to approximately 3000 rpm.
By raising the shift points, the emissions warm-up phase is reduced and the catalyst is heated faster for improved efficiency and better emissions performance.
Also, as someone has indicated, the manual states, "Immediately drive off when starting the engine. Do not let the engine sit idle to warm up."
Good luck

They also recommend against idling, saying somewhere in the manual that if you plan to be parked for a bit (more than 2 min.?) you should stop the engine.

Do not idle the engine to warm up! It's a myth!
1. The engine runs rich when cold, this way (gas-) condensation on the cylinder walls which washes away the oil, no good!
2. Very high emissions, think pollution.
3. As long as we are easy on the throttle until warm no harm will be done to the engine.
I could really get into an argument when my neighbour lets his truck run for 20 mins every morning, it STINKS and it's LOUD (modified exhaust)

Re: How many people warm there car up for 2-5 minutes? (andyA6)

I let the RPMs get down to 900 from 1100 and then I go and not proceed to go past 3K RPM.
After three hashes on my water temp, I am fully warmed up and don't go past 4.5K RPM... unless I am trying to speed.

Re: How many people warm there car up for 2-5 minutes? (Patmsbca)

Same for me. A little rough idle at startup and let it warm up until it stops and rpms drop to 900. Even after that most times when put into drive, it will run fine then the engine growls for a few seconds then quiets down again.

Oh man, I had a next door neighbor like this until about a year ago. The idiot drove an F350 Duallie diesel as a commuter car after he had to drive in one minor snowstorm after he moved here from a warmer climate. He would let that thing sit and idle for 30 minutes in the morning!

All my cars, even the diesel Rabbit, that I've owned I've never let idle for more than 10 seconds or so. But I always take it real easy for the first 5 minutes or so.
Also, since installing oil pressure and temp gauges, I've noticed that it takes a bit longer for the oil to heat up than the coolant. On my drive it takes around 5 minutes after the coolant is reading "normal" before the oil pressure and temps reach "normal".

quote:

I know so many people that just start there car up and just run the crap out of it. I keep telling them, warm up the engine first before you start driving.

i start my car, buckle my seat belt, look around to make sure none of our cats are afoot, and then go. i then keep the tach under 3k until i hit 190 on the temp and then i drive normally.
how about running the air conditioning? does anyone crank the ac up right away?
i always wait until the same 190 mark on the temp before switching on the ac, but there are days when those first few minutes are a sweat fest. luckily my car hits the 190 mark real quick and then i hit the ac (also learned from the vortex to not crank the ac full at first, but to instead run it low for a couple of minutes - i guess that lets things get real cool before the blower kicks in or something).

Agree with the replies...to not let your car sit but just to drive away.
I lived in Iceland for awhile and my drive to work lasted, oh about 2 minutes. My car did fine (95 Golf) until about 2-3 months of driving. Then the valves would start clicking. Changed my oil - had gas in the valves strangely enough - problem solved. Happened again X2. Grrrrr. On the advice of a mechanic, I found out I wasn't letting the engine temp get high enough to burn the gas off. Started to drive for at least 5 minutes on my travel to work and viola!, problem solved. And I never let the engine 'warm' up when I first started - I just took off and drove for the 5 minutes. Soooo, if you have a 2-3 minute commute in very cold weather, just drive longer! Jim

WhenI bought a VW a few years ago from an engineer at Petro Canada, (he was specialised in lubricants) he specificaly told me not to let the car sit. Drive right away... slowly until stable temperature.

Bingo ,, you win first prize for the best answer so far.
Just get in the bi*ch and drive like hell

The coolant is controled by the thermostat, so it may appear that the coolant temperature has reached normal range, but in fact it may not. The needle will usually move into the normal range after just 3-5 minutes of driving, depending on outside temp. The oil temp gauge is a more accurate reading of whether the engine is completely warmed up. It may take 10-15 minutes for that to happen.
But in any case, I agree with the suggestion that there is no need to idle more than 30 seconds to let the engine warm up and drive away. Driving the car slowly is more efficient to bring up the engine temperature to optimal levels.
