How about a Mazda Protege sedan or Protege5? I bet you could find one that meets your criteria easily.

the 5 is too pricey, but im keeping my eyes open for regular proteges..solid cars http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Sounds like you might need to change your criteria...

i don't think she will. we have several solid options on the table right now, but just making sure we aren't missing anything before she pulls the trigger.

Re: give me some advice (BattleRabbit)

e30...ditch the 98 or newer part
318ti might get a 98 or better
saabs could be had for this money as well and still have A LOT of life left...
passat 1.8t with records.

Subaru?
Here is a 5 speed Forester (but has 89k miles)

The last gen Hyundai Elantra are good cars.

And here is an 02 Sonata.

And you said not domestics- fair enough. The Escort ZX2 is on the same platform as the Protege, and is a solid car fwiw. Also- a 5 speed Mazda 626 in both 2.0 or 2.5 V6 form is a good car, but hard to find (with low miles).

very nice finds. she hates the forester, however you have me tempted to buy that thing myself.
as for the sonata, that is a really good find, and its probably number one in the hunt right now http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
despite the higher mileage then the 2001 i found, the restyled body is IMO 1000 times better then the outgoing style. plus, 2002 added side airbags standard, which is an important feature.

Well... it would suck in the snow- but what about an Amigo?(the affordable Wrangler)

she hates trucks and wants decent gas mileage. at least the hyundai is front wheel drive...ill get her to throw some blizzaks on it and itll be just fine. i think shes gonna stay off the roads when it snows anyway, at least until they are plowed.

That makes sense.
Here is an interesting find- but I question the condition considering the price and miles (just 52k?).

something looks funky around the shifter.

Go with an Elantra GT. I picked up my 2002 w/ 65k in 2005 for a little over $6k. Manual trans, multitude of options, cheap maintenance, decent power, safe as anything else you will find in the price range, subjective good looks (Saabesque). Just make sure the timing belt is changed around the mileage you are looking for.

Re: (Thrice)

Maybe an older Celica of the 94-99 variant?

Cutting out American cars entirely is just stupid though just because she hates her Escort. Lots of great American cars out there...

most 5 speed mk4's are over 5k...and i wouldnt want her to get a 2 litre as it is an entirely underpowered motor. not to mention high mileage VWs really aren't any better then american cars in terms of reliability. if she had more money to spend, id suggest it.

Yeah i was talking about mk3, 98 or 99. Mine is a 97 2.0 with 190K km on the clock. Drove it 40K with nothing but regular maintainence. The mk3 2.0 is better then a civic and the 5 spd holds its own in the autox sessions.
Its starting to rust though
