Re: (eso)

if the timing belt hasn't been done since the engine swap, then you need to do that now. otherwise, make sure to have bulletproof maintenance records showing vw 502.00 oils used every 5k, otherwise you're taking a big gamble, as it might have sludge.

Re: Saw a B5 for sale (eso)

Unfortunately, a boost gauge or any mod such as that is generally a sign that the car was beat on. I would never buy a car like that. I don't want to anger the people on here who have such mods who actually do take care of their car, but the fact is nobody knows and it likely increases the chances that the previous owner drove in a "spirited" manner.
Otherwise, it will be a risky buy, but probably not more so than any other car with 190,000 miles on it (even with a newer engine).

Re: Saw a B5 for sale (classicjetta)

Good points that I agree with. However, if he could get it for $3k or less, and even if he had to do a total engine rebuild for another $3K, then you have an old car with a new engine for $6k, assuming all else is okay with the car. If the motor has life left in it, then that isn't a whole lot of money for such a well-equipped car. It just might require more $$$ in maintenance and repairs like most cars with 190k miles.
Depends on how you look at it, and on how much patience you might have for fixing things.

I hope when we changed it at 140k it was for the second time??

If thats the only time he's changed it, he probably never took care of the car right. Everyone here is right when they say a boost gauge, means more "aggressive" driving and especially on a 190k body.
You can buy it for $3k, but keep another $3k in the bank for repairs, not mods!!
edit: i just had my pass window drop, its a window regulator and they cost about $200 (including labor)

more info
did u ever change the suspension..to new parts?
like new struts?
shocks?
etc..

No, i personally have not changed shocks or struts. car rides very smooth and nicely though.

why did u have the boost gauge?
has this been raced?
beat on?
and why the high mileage
and new motor?
bought the car with the mileage it has on it currently. i was told it was a back and forth commuting car to chicago for work from the previous owner. No, the car has not been beat on and no it has never been raced. the only reason for the boost gauge being installed is cause it was lying around and why not put it in since i had it. The motor was installed by the previous owner and was used. That is the mileage i was told that was on the motor. I believe i may have a reciept also for it.
when you said "Driver window off track. Very easy fix. Just needs 2 clips from VW"
that means a new window regulator
which is $84

Well when i called VW they said the clips were only like 3 dollars a piece but if thats the case then thats why the price is negotiable and is OBO. If you are interested, PM me an offer and we can work out a very good price and deal for ya cause need the car sold asap

Re: (eso)

I say offer $2500 and if you have a good commuter for 1 year then you're doing okay. I am a fanatic of 5 speed manual trannys, got 3 in the driveway, this one looks to have a tip-tronic.
Anyone care to chime in concerning a "tiptronic" tranny with 190K miles on her, possibly romped on by a ***** kid.
