I drive with the seat really close, my knees bent, with my feet solidly planted in the clutch, gas, or brake pedals. I drive with the seat back almost vertical, without slouching in the seat. I dont get it when I see people driving really laid back, slouching. You need to be in a position that allows you to be in control, and in be able to see everyting around you. Do they think they look cool? I think that's an irresponsible way to seat in the driver seat of a machine with the potential to kill and/or maim.

Re: got the new 24v sick speed? (mlesher)

The new six-speed (MQ350/02M350) should be fine and won't suffer the same 2nd gear grind issue that older cars had because it isn't the same transmission.
The five-speed 02J250 transmission got some "upgrades" during early 2001 model year production, so 2nd gear grind should be far less of a problem on 2002 and 2003 models.

I have never felt the 2nd gear grind in my car in over 22K miles of driving. Also drove a 6-speed GLI and it felt much smoother than the 5-speed in my car.

Yep......he is exactly right.......i'm tall enought to have the seat all the way back and still drive,.....but occasionally if you don't get that clutch all the way in (on accident) you'll get some grinding........so just slide up some

I never felt the 2nd gear grind in my MK3 VR6 for the first 90K miles and just started getting it last week (at 91K miles) so...
Just cause you made it 22K miles doesn't mean a whole bunch!!!!
Enjoy it tho, your car is newer so they most likely improved it.

How to approach dealer: tsb, silent recall, "Jamie sent me"?

Uh, no. They will most likely throw you out.

I have no idea what was changed, but I understand VW made changes. If you have 2nd gear grind that is easy to replicate for a dealer you may want to take it in again and ask.

Jamie,
Unfortunately,
My 2nd gear grind occurs when I meet up with my vw buds on a weekend and go driving.
If I were to replicate my grind it they would void my entire warranty...
Image

It only occurs when running to redline and then shifting to 3rd.
Not too often but just enough to be a pain...especially when I raced that 337 one night and completely missed 2nd gear!!! Well, made him feel good abou his new car.
Hope I don't get this thread locked by that comment...don't do it man!!!

Re: got the new 24v sick speed? (bora99_2000)

got a 2002 VR6 6-spd..
No problem at all with the gears.. everything is smooth.
I would suspect driver error is to blame a good part of the time.
If it gets to be a big problem there is always the tiptronic

Well, I will never come close to 91K miles. I plan on trading out of it by the time it hits 24K miles.

So you are telling me that in 14 years I have not learned yet to drive stick?

There is something wrong with the 5sp tranny in Mk4s, and VW knows about it. it doesnt happen all the time, and you get the usual "Couldnt replicate symptom stated by customer" when you bring your car to the dealer.
