I'm getting this smell from my a/c when I turn it on. It's been a while it happened and I only had my car for 10months! Usually I do turn off the a/c and have the fan blow at high for 5-10min before I reach my destination.
I never had this problem in my Mk.3 Jetta with a smell in the a/c. What could be wrong? I read somewhere that alot of the Mk.4's have this problem?

How dare you break wind in your car.
That stuff stays in your seats man! My dad's 86 subaru reaked any time someone sat in the drivers seat and it pushed all the air out of the cusion

Re: Airconditioning smells? (vdublife)

It isn't the smell of burned clutch or rubber. Hard to describe the smell of it but they smell similiar to other cars which have the smell intheir a/c.. kinda like bacteria or mould inthe a/c system. but it only smells for a while when I turn the a/c on, so I just open the window to let the foul air go out and the smell is gone.
Didn't had this problem when I first got the car.

Suggestion--
Its possible that your AC system may have some mold/mildew of sorts growing in there. Without seeing it up close and using my highly-tuned olfactory department

, i'd say thats it.
Preventive Maitenance-- When you are running your AC, do like I do. a couple minutes before I get outta the car, I switch it off and run the fan full blast. It helps to remove any condensation that may be present in the system, and therefor gives the mold monsters no place to reside in.
That and don't use the recirculate at lower fan speeds.
Invest in a can of Ozium

Thanks for your input. I always or mostly do turn off the a/c and turn the fan speed at high to clear out the condensation.
Where can I get a can of Ozium and what does it do?

Ozium is a high-performance odor-killer. Not knowing what the local auto parts store is in your neck of the Great White North, I can't make a suggestion, but i get mine at Pep Boys.
Its a tiny little aerosol can type of thing... almost looks like Binaca, if you remember that stuff...
Geez, i just dated myself!

Re: Airconditioning smells? (garyw)

I got bad smell from my car when I first start using it in the beginning of summer.

I thouhght it's because I floored it too hard. ( my dub is chipped)
Anyway, after a few weeks, it is just gone and I have not smelled it again since then. So, I thought that it may be because the a/c has not been turned on for quite sometimes...
But frankly, I have no idea why it's gone. My driving pattern is still quite the same.
Anyway, good luck

quote:

what does it smell like??? Did you burn your clutch??? Because I burned my clutch at the track so my car still smells like a little burned rubber from time to time.

Are you saying your clutch is made of rubber?

Binaca is still around. So when are you dating yourself? Born yesterday? J/K.
I have the same stank in my A/C. I beleive the dealer will prof. clean it for you under warranty. I need to take in mine.

Re: Airconditioning smells? (Mr. Potato Head)

I think it has something to do with the chipping. I had the same problem...but when I took my chip out (long story)...the smell was gone...until I put another chip on 2 month later...and the smell came back.
But it is all gone now, after I installed my cat-back exhuast. Weird

I never had the problem with my MK3 either. But I have a terrible mold/mildew smell coming from my A/C as well. But now the A/C is leaking water on to the floor on my passenger side. Do yourself a favor & check under your floormats front & back passenger side. 3 people on here now have confirmed that there is water on the floor that is molding in their carpet & that is part of the smell. I take my car in this week to have it checked out.
