Alright, From what i can tell it's not throwing any new codes....my CEL has been on for ages, codes dealing with O2 sensors. It has not flashed any new codes since...so with that being said
Every once in a while, i'll go to start my car, and it'll take for every to start....it'll turn over continuously but wont start, and then when it finally does, it's sputtering like crazy.
eventually the sputtering stops but it idles higher than normal upon start (around 1500-2000rpms.) I give it gas & it sputters (all the while black smoke is coming out of the exhaust---so i know im running rich but not sure why)
After running high rpms upon start and sputtering for about a minute or two....it'll finally drop back down to normal idle range & will start rinning normally again. This has happened many times in the past 2 or 3 weeks. Any idea why my car would be doing this?
it's a 2005 1.8t
GIAC flashed ECU
3" Turboback
GIAC CAI
Forge 007

have you pulled the maf to see if its running better with it out?

whoops, forgot to mention that.....
the other day when it did this...i turned the car off...disconnected the MAF & started it back up & it was still doing it.

also, i don't want to just bypass the problem, i'd rather fix it....i did try disconnecting to see if that's what it was, but i dont want to run around w/ disconnected MAF.

i think i'm throwing codes for both, if i remember correctly. I need to get those o2 sensor blocks that move the sensor away from the piping to clear 'em

Re: running like hell.....every once in a while (audi666)

haven't checked the plugs yet...don't know why the hell i didnt think to do that...i'll do that tomorrow morning when im not @ work
I wasn't on the same tank the entire time, but it was two seperate tanks from the same place
i just filled up today @ exxon instead of wawa, thinking maybe that had something to do with it...we'll see i guess (wawa near my house for some reason switched from 93oct. to 92oct. and i didnt notice until recently)

could that mean your MAF is non-functioning?

i know most people diagnose the above problems that i'm having by simply saying unplug the MAF and it should run fine....however i dont want to bypass the problem, i want to fix it.

Re: running like hell.....every once in a while (mdcclxxvi)

my car was doing the asme thing when i had maf problems could also be your boost sensor

Re: running like hell.....every once in a while (mk420ae)

if it were coilpacks/plugs, why would it only idle badly for a minute or two? wouldn't it continuously do it?
i start it, it idles like ****, then it idles high...then it'll eventually go back to normal

the same thing was happening to my friends stg 3 s4. he was also having idling problems but only when it was warming up like you. He was running rich and black smoke would come out of the exhaust when he got on it, which sound about like the same case your running into. we just changed his maf and it seems to have eliminated his problems
