What's the best driving music? Something that doesn't draw attention to itself or distract you from the road? I personally find classical music does this pretty well. I never have the patience to sit through it at home but it just works on a road trip. How about you?

Long highway trip: Progressive rock/metal, and some power metal (of the more symphonic/proggy variety): Dream Theater, Kamelot, Opeth, Symphony X, Evergrey, Porcupine Tree, Tristania, Queensryche, Yes, Ayreon, Angra, Nightwish, Epica, Rhapsody, etc...
The music varies a lot, remains interesting throughout, lasts forever, and will definitely keep you awake, but also entertained.
There's one exception, though. If you happen to be on a Southern US highway, driving a car/truck with at least 8 cylinders, there's only one real answer: ZZ Top
For city driving, you need something energetic and fast. My personal favorites include power metal (Rhapsody works for this too, Sonata Arctica, select Kamelot or Angra songs, Lost Horizon, etc...), melodic death metal (Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, Death), or straight-ahead rock or metal (Paul Gilbert, Armageddon, Iron Maiden, Racer X, Firewind, Dream Evil, Pantera...)
These threads pop up pretty often, but I always enjoy them

Re: (leaftye)

I love all sorts of music in the car, but for long road trips, I love listening to Ben Neill, Gus Gus, Groove Armada, Morcheeba, Portishead, Muse, ect. Anything that is chill with awesome beats basically. However, when I am with friends, it is fun to rock out with whatever you can sing along with and make an ass out of yourself in the car too!

And of corse Tool and A Perfect Circle work great for drives too!

when i had a car, and it was one of the few i had with a radio, my ipod was either set on permanent shuffle (lots of metal, hardcore, and post-rock), or whatever was new.
on road trips, it was usually explosions in the sky, slayer (or some similar metal band with a large discography), or an audiobook, and usually harry potter.
yeah, slayer and harry potter. i'm just THAT cool!

I'm old. Other than Tom Petty and Cake, I don't know who these bands are. Do you kids still even call them bands?
SportsTalk Radio -- idiots rambling on all day and all night. It keeps you awake.
