My car was to have some bodywork done due to two separate negligent drivers and so a rental car it was! I spoke to a nice guy named Matt at the local Enterprise location whom I tentatively convinced to give me either an Impala SS or a Pontiac GXP for the week. Much to my dismay a rep from a different location picked me up and my choices were dismal. I could have gotten either a 4 cylinder Sebring, a Dodge Caravan, or a 2008 Highlander with 400 miles on it. Highlander it is.
Let me first say that I am not one for truck-ish vehicles. It irks me to no end to see a 5'2" woman driving a honking Escalade all by herself so I wasn't exactly thrilled with this behemoth. And a behemoth it is. It has three full rows of seats, zero rear visibility, the gas mileage of an Abrams A1, and the parallel parking ability of a coach bus.
My initial driving impressions weren't too great. I could NOT find a comfortable driving position (I'm 6'2"). I was either far too close to the wheel that my legs were crunched, or I was leaning back like I was in a Jay-Z video. Yes, there's a third row of seats with two tall headrests. I bet those headrests come in handy when you have someone back there but I simply could not see out the back. My car's somewhat quick and accelerating to highway speeds is effortless. I'm not saying I was expecting F1 like acceleration but the thing simply is not fast in any way, shape, or form. I will say that with some goading it will eventually hit 80+ mph and is VERY quiet while doing so, I was very impressed about that.
I had the opportunity to drive the thing with about 3 inches of snow on the ground and overall I was impressed. Acceleration in the snow and stability is stellar. I would go as far as to say that it was simply the best vehicle I've driven in the snow while moving. Stopping, on the other hand, was another matter entirely. The onset of ABS came way too soon to the point where I simply slid instead of slowed. There was no easy way of modulating the brake pedal in order to slow the thing down properly.
A glowing review? No. But, I was sad to see it go. The thing is just so damned easy to drive it's scary. There's zero driver involvement, no fuss, no issues, it just goes. For me, not my style, but I guess I could kind of see the appeal of such a vehicle if you and your significant other simply have not figured how to use contraceptives and have more kids than Joseph Smith.
Pros:
-Easy to drive
-Great in the snow while moving
-Crap tons of room
-The cargo room to hold roughly 22, 18 year old Depaul sorority girls if the seats have been removed
Cons:
-ZERO rear visibility
-Dismal gas mileage
-Not capable of stopping properly in the slippery stuff
-Uncomfortable driver seat position

I'm calling you out on this. I say it's BS unless you got photos to back that up.

Review summed it up for me and the RX. I HATED that truck as a loaner and it wasn't until about the 5th time I "got" it. It drove like an ES but I could go to Home Depot with no issues and the higher ride height was nice.
Good review.

Public response on these has been rather quiet as of late.

The local Toyota dealer is advertising these out front with a ginormous $3,000 off sticker on the side. It seems like a step up from the old Highlander...until I noticed the hybrid version topped $45,000!

They dropped the 4 banger, so a cheap Highlander is a thing of the past I'm afraid.

have you even attempted to fold down the 3rd row seats? That should solve your complaint about the rear visibility. It's not even that hard to do

Nope. I only opened the rear end once to put in groceries. That brings up a good point, with the third row elevated there is barely any room in the "trunk". This thing really should have been offered only has a two row vehicle IMO.

I dont understand why they have no LEDs in the back yet the cheaper RAV4 does

I think there's some unstated reason why companies are reverting to conventional bulb taillamps: Accord, Sable, Highlander, 3-Series. It's strange the enthusiast base hasn't found out what it is yet though...

I do not know too much about LED circuitry, but as they burn out (I realise that their life span is much longer than a conventional bulb), wouldn't it be extremely hard to replace on the fly (without soldering) and require replacement of the whole assembly?

Cheap voltage regulation system == burnt out LED bulbs. Plus on a lot of em if a single bulb burns out you have to replace the whole cluster.
I'm not 100% on this one, but then there's also the thing that patterned LEDs can get boring really fast. For some reason, auto makers haven't figured out how to use mirrors and/or fiber optics with them to come up with cool effects :\
Too bad, because I like the response time of LEDs, and wish they were used as both brake lights and turn signals (whoever combines LED tails with halogen turn signal should be smacked upside the head)

I recall only the Infiniti FX & BMW e46 have tail and turn signal LEDs.

not all e46's have turn signal leds, let alone leds. The refreshed e46 coupes/convertibles got leds. Sedans were stuck with incadescents.
...don't forget, many cadillacs have brake & turn signal leds.
my passat does also.

Wow... that sounds almost exactly like how my vehicle performs in 3" of snow, and it's just a Front wheel drive car with All-Seasons tires. But without the stopping drama.

Re: A week with a brand new Toyota Highlander V6 review. (dak125)

My dad bought one two weeks ago and has been enjoying it so far. I haven't driven it yet, but I'm very impressed by how much more roomy it is than the previous model, especially for the 2nd row passengers. The back-up camera works great and it has all of the little featurs that seem to be standard these days (lots of cup-holders, heated seats, multiple aux-power inputs, etc).
If this had been out when we bought my wife's Pilot, it would have seriously been worth considering. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

I noticed that the Cadillac DTS has LED backup lamps as well as stop/tail/CHMSL. Makes a nifty "HID" color. I'm guessing the only reason that Cadillac doesn't use HID in the front signal lamps is due to the DRL system.

Re: A week with a brand new Toyota Highlander V6 review. (Bugg33)

I can't get over the styling. It can't seem to make up it's mind if it wants to be boxy or curvy and it looks way too much like the RAV4 and new LC.
With that said. I think Toyota did a pretty decent job overall with the update. It has a wonderfully smooth powertrain, decent (for it's class) fuel economy, a very nice interior, and fairly useable interior space/packaging. I really don't care for the stupid "mini" seat in the middle of the 2nd row however. I'm sure they'll sell tons of them, but the competition is definitely catching up or surpasing the Highlander IMO (e.g. Mazda CX-9, the Lambda triplets, new Murano; unless you need a 3rd row).
Somewhat off topic, but when is Honda going to finally come out w/ a new Pilot? It's so behind the competition in terms of HP, feature content and styling, it's not even funny.

Re: A week with a brand new Toyota Highlander V6 review. (Bugg33)

I've always liked the Highlander as it seems like a minivan with an SUV suit. I would have never thought about getting the previous generation for fear of looking like a soccer dad. The price is getting up there on the new ones, as the base price is $27,300

What if she was on her way to pick up her 4 children from school? Rappers and gangbangers drive excalades by themselves all the time. Is THAT ok?

Were you expecting it to drive like a GTI or something....it's a midsize SUV with 3 rows of seating! Of course it's gonna be big. I was actually laughing while I was reading this, thinking that you should drive my 15mpg Titan sometime, or park it for that matter. It's not a bad thing, just takes some getting used to.
