The REASON it doesn't work the same is obvious when you unscrew the side grilles and look behind. There is a backing that is glued/taped to the body of the car behind the sidemarker light. I ended up nearly pushing the backing off completely in my first attempt. Needless to say, just pull the side grilles off, remove the backing to the slats of the side grilles while you have them off, then unclip the side marker and do your swap.
Here is a quick removal video for the slats, too easy to need one, but for those more visually inclined.

...they are installed differently and don't come out as easily.
Folks here talk about removing the lower grills to get to them....

do it...take the lower grills out its only 2 screws and then you can reach your hand up in there and gently un clip them out...i made the mistake of following the mk5 forum diy on pushing in on the front of the sidemarker lens and ended up popping off the entire holder that holds the lens to the bumper

its just double sided stick taped on and i tried to fix it but it looks like ****

ill have to take the entire bumper off now to fix it correctly...oh and i still had to take the lower grills off in order to get it out...so save yourself the hassle and just take the lower grills off makes it such an easy thing to do http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

nvm i got it, i found a much easier way, just unscrew the bottom screw of the fender wall then pull it aside and your hand is right there, thanks!

I found this way gets a bit dirtier if your liner isn't clean.

I did this same thing last night. Thinking it was like my GTI I pushed inwards and heard tape breaking

! I opened the hood and there is a large opening to remove the side marker. I don't think I'll need to remove the lower grills.
