I test drove someones 97 VR6 the other day (trying to buy it) but the shifter would move about 1/2 an inch farther than the end of the gear (when you put it all the way in gear) it wouldn't move without a little effort but would move nonetheless and spring back into place after. Is that normal??? Or is there something wrong with this cars tranny? The car only has 58,000 miles on it.

That's normal...I know exactly what you mean...Like when you put it into second, you can pull it back just a little bit more and then it will spring back into place (in second gear). And yes I have checked a couple other cars and they are the same...mk4 at least.

Re: Is play in the shifter normal for VR6? Compared to 2.0L? (DGMVW)

Thank you! That makes me feel a helluvalot better. I still think it's a little odd though. Why does it do that? What's different between the 2.0 and 2.8 gearboxes?

its the shifter design. my shifter feels so sloppy. i finally broke the linkage to the trans, had to get it welded back together. just got my b&m shifter in today. will have to install tomorrow.looks pretty trick in the package.

Sometimes when my car is in ANY gear, I push against the shifter and think about how the distance from having the shifter extended to where is naturally sits in gear is about the same distance I would have in a sequential gearbox.

This is probably because of the cable shifter design. My guess for one is cables stretch out, two the word on the street is that VW gears boxes have always been pretty sloppy

Re: Is play in the shifter normal for VR6? Compared to 2.0L? (euro4life1)

My car started doing this a little while ago. I've driven it a couple thousand miles since I bought it and now it has roughly 45,000 miles. When I shift from 1st to 2nd gear in the morning(I dread this) when the car is cold it almost always has this two position problem. It doesn't do it in other gears though. After one or two shifts it completely stops and the shifter feels pretty good. Maybe it is due to it being a cable shifter or maybe the tranny fluid needs to be changed? My previous car(944S2) had this early morning shifting problem as well.

I'm not sure if this is a for sure fix for the issue, but I am going to pick one up ASAP as it makes a good deal of sense, plus the diesel geek short shifter is very well thought of and I can assume the quality would carry over to the other products -

im sure the dg shifter is nice but the price is to steep.plus you have to pay core charge.and in the end you still have the stock shifter. i just installed the b&m sport shifter and its tight as hell. cnc billet alumn. and full stainless stick for 149.00. took away all that slop. i wont miss a shift again

Re: Is play in the shifter normal for VR6? Compared to 2.0L? (ricers-beware)

Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the nature of a "short shifter" to adjust the actual fulcrum point of the linkage, rather that just shorten the stick? From what is I see here, the B&M shifter just looks like a shorter stick - http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/sha...l.cfm?PMaI=3&PMoI=18&PEI=12&PP=mk3gj_vr6_interior.cfm&PPT=Interior&IL=bmshifter . Seems to effectively shorten the throw but reduce the leverage.

Re: Is play in the shifter normal for VR6? Compared to 2.0L? (Ginster2go)

that pic is not the shifter for a golf 3. the stick is the exact same length as stock. the reduction is in the billet block that it attaches to. stock shift knob screws right on.this is a true short shift and is high quality.the stick is the same length to give you leverage for the shoter throws.trust me

My SLC's shifter was a joke until I got a short shift for it. Everyone's going to kill me, but it's an EIP one. It works great. It got rid of the horrible side-to-side slop.

I've been very happy with their short shift. And I'm not being paid to say this either.
