in a bizarre twist of fate myself and two co-workers have had their bank accounts frozen because of a Possible fraud.
all 3 of us work in the same department and all 3 of us bank with TD bank
i know there are a few vortexers that work in the same area as I do I'm wondering if they've had their accounts frozen too?

Re: anyone get a call from TDbank last night? (PrupleGTI)

I didn't get a call last night, but I've had it happen before. I had $500 taken out of my account in Montreal a few hours after I took out money in Brampton. TD froze my account and called me. I had to go to a branch and they printed all my transactions for 3 months and we cheacked them all over. Then I was given a new card and I picked a new PIN number. TD refunded my money within 4 days. I didn't have any problems dealing with them at all.

I'm not with TD, but me and my room mate had our accounts drained from some ATM in Montreal as well maybe 6 months ago. The police have started an investigation on it, I'm sure its a huge debit card fraud ring.

is there a bank machine by your work you use often?
i had it happen to me a while back but about 10 co workers had it happen to them from the same machine around the corner from us in a span of 1 week.

*raises hand* im a victim. goin to TD after work to see whats up.

ATMs that are private owned are doing some sort of **** with cards...my bank is with royal and i had my account DRAINED i had issues with insurance (NSF) because of this recently and i didn't even know.
I went into my bank and tried to sort it out...i got a new card, got new debt, and advised not to use ATMs other than ones from major banks

Re: (zeroman)

i use my visa for everything. gas, subway (food) - anything that will take visa i use it, or cash.
debit charges are silly, and there's so many decent incentive programs to use no-fee-per-transaction visa or MC cards.
add the fraud crap on top, and there's plenty of reasons to use the CC instead.
thank you PrupleGTI for making me see the light. I save quite a bit per month.

I told you my friend these days I use Cash only saved me $80.00 a month in transaction fees

Re: (spoonie)

We had that with CIBC last year. Received a call one evening from the CIBC Fraud Unit. Something like $800 taken from the account over a two day period. Account was frozen for a day, new bank cards issued, and full amount refunded by CIBC. Glad to see someone on the ball.

Re: (vw'r'us)

I had this happen last year with my RBC chequing account. I have a $300 daily withdrawal limit, but somehow someone was able to drain $800 from it. Had to sign all the fraud papers and stuff.
I use a credit card now, however in the states, CC fraud is worse than debit, that's why they always ask for photo id when you make a purchase. Some banks even have your photo on your credit card! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

My wife and I have both been victims of credit card fraud; it's just as much of a threat as using debit.
No issues with M/C getting the transactions reversed, but it's still a pain in the butt!!

Re: (bomber22)

Number 1 rule for Debit card saftey. Never use it.
Only ever use your own bank's ATM, if you can't find your bank then only use another major bank. (ATM's located in branch are safer)
Never use it in no name ATM's. This is just asking for trouble
Never hand it to anyone but a bank employee to swipe it. This rules out almost every type or debit transactions.
Use your credit card for almost every kind of transaction you can. You are better protected and don't risk having you account frozen. But you do need to have self control to pay it in full every couple weeks.

Re: (MK39920)

This happened to my brother not so long ago with BMO. It was traced back to Grand Bend ontario, where we spend a lot of out time during the summer. If i remember correctly it was narrowed down to the sobeys and the people who did this went as far as montreal to spend the money they gained by doing this. He had $900 stolen. BMO froze his account and in a few days he was reimbursed in full.
He also now only uses his credit cards or cash.
My father did recieve a call last night from some guy claiming he was part of Ryerson University "confirming" my fathers information. And my buddies Father got called from Western University asking for "confirmation" of his information as well. I am assuming this might be some sort of crime ring looking to gain peoples information as well. Anyone have the same thing happen?

Re: (PrupleGTI)

My parents had this happen with Royal awhile back. The guys took just over $10 000 in 2 nights

. Luckily, they were able to trace it back to a gas station in hamilton and they busted the whole ring, and then deported them

. RBC was really good with them and talked with them for over an hour on how to protect yourself and then refunded them their money http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Probably the 2 things they said to me that stuck in my mind the most: 1)Change your PIN often. They usually have your info for over a month before they strike. If you change your PIN, they can't get it. 2)If they swipe your card and the transaction doesn't go through for whatever reason and they say they have to swipe again, make sure you get a receipt for the cancelled transaction.
