I noticed a large spring on my floorboard this morning. It's about the size of a spring that you see on trampoline s- maybe 7 or 8 inches. It has hooks at either end and a rubber collar about halfway down. I had my seat pushed all the way forward to haul some stuff yesterday.
Anyone know where it goes or how to get it back in place?

Re: seat spring? (achtung)

Not sure where it goes, but this same spring came off the seat on my girl's 2001 jetta. There was also a piece of broken plastic that looked like the spring attached to it.

Re: seat spring? (achtung)

Well I haven't done much research into it - i.e. looking under the seat to see where it goes. I just thought I would quickly ask before getting into that awkward blood-rushing-to-my-head-as-I-lean-upside-down-to-see-under-the-seat pose. My guess is that it assists with the seat moving forward. I have a 99.5 Jetta GL.

Thanx to Verruckt for snapping the picture. It is the one on the left of the seat. Not sure what it does though. Looks like it could be involved in the adjustment somehow.

Re: seat spring? (achtung)

Actually, that is the Ejector spring, it keeps the seat held down during normal driving conditions, and allows for quick ejections (like k.i.t.t. from knight rider).
Without it, you're taking serious risks, just don't press any red buttons labeled "EJECT" and you should be on the straight.

Re: seat spring? (E5 Performance)

had mine on passenger side break off while i was driving....that thing sounded like a gunshot going off.....scared the poop out of me....took it in under warranty to have it fixed and while they were fixing it, noticed the driver side had broken also...got them both fixed under warranty....anyone knows how much it cost to get fixed?...i bet its pricey...i think they had to order some sort of seat frame to fix them...hope these things dont break often like regulators, but after being fixed, mine are still fine after a long time.

Re: seat spring? (JettaKnightVR6)

Crap!! I was looking under the driver's side seat to see where it goes, and I noticed that THAT one was just sitting there! It was in some sort of metal chute, and the piece of crap plastic tab that it attaches to is missing. This is similar to the regulator thing. Why would they use ****ty plastic to control a large spring like this? It needs metal tabs!! Well, the seats seem to function normally, and since I'm at 35k miles, I'm not worrying about it. It can be the Kevin Spring mod - 1 lb. weight reduction. See the picture:

If you guys need any other pictures let me know asap because I have the seats just sitting in my garage right now and it would be easy to take a couple snaps of the under side.
This is why I have them just sitting around...

Re: seat spring? (Verruckt)

Well, Its nice to know I'm not alone on this one. I brought my car in to get the windows tinted and when I got it back the guy had moved the passenger seat all the way forward. When I got home I tried to move it back and it wouldn't budge. Think I looked under the seat and saw this spring sitting there. Now its on the floorboard and the seat functions fine!!

Re: seat spring? (1987&2001Jettas)

Could you please tell me what is the spring hooked to in the rear?.
Actually, the spring is part of the seat height adjustment mechanism. Its purpose is to aid with the UP movement.
Thanks in advance,
Rodrigo

Re: seat spring? (achtung)

The same spring fell off under my drivers seat about one week ago...Im so glad I finally saw a post about it. I found out where it went by reaching under the passengers seat and feeling that spring. I couldnt get it back on and its not affecting my seat so I just left it off. Has anybody gotten it back on?

Re: seat spring? (achtung)

I was running wire in my car and I saw that same spring just sitting there on the floor with a broken piece of metal painted black (looks like where it hooks) on the passenger side. I checked my driver side and it assists in pulling the seat forward when adjusting it. I can't put the spring back on mine since the broken piece is what it used to hook on to. Oh well...it didn't seem to assist much anyway.

Re: seat spring? (radgolf)

Some pics I took this morning...
Hook towards the front of the seat...

Hook towards the front of the seat again...

Where it connects towards the back of the seat...

Somewhere inside here is the connection at the back...

Re: seat spring? (TurboBoostin)

Thanks a lot, verruckt.
I can now tell that the rear hook is broken in both front seats.
Trouble is that I'd have to replace the whole seat frame to fix this: definitely not worthwhile.

Re: seat spring? (1987&2001Jettas)

what is the problem exactly? besides the spring being out of place? is the seat making a knocking sound when your weight is shifted forwards or backwards? mine does that.. i still don't know what's causing it.
