The answer is "yes" MB changed their numbering nomenclature in 1994, so all the cars before then were 500E. From 1994 on, they were E500, which continues on to this day. Likewise, the rest of the model line.

I need to look up for a specific link. But I am old enough to remember this car when it came out, even got to ride in one in 1979. I just remember they were called "Hammer" in reference to a story on the cars where the author called them "a hammer in a velvet veil".
I see what I can find......
