Well I just recently purchased a 2004 VW GTI 1.8 with 48k miles. On average, what is the life span of the car (with all maintenance done regularly). Does it outlast Hondas, Toyotas, etc??? I know every car is different but are there certain things I should look for?

Re: (71DubBugBug)

you just bought your self a car thats a hoot to drive, but the only reason its so fun to drive is because you wont be doing much driving, you'll be doing alot of tinkering, so when you do drive, its all the better

Re: New to VW (cdavison)

just clocked 150K - I picked it up last year - at 150K it's not really all that surprising but I've replaced:
Belt tensioner, pulley and belt, replaced all the e-brake cables - 400 (incl labor)
Coil pack - 100 on the vortex - replaced it myself
New battery - 85 bucks
General maintenance (coolant flush etc., oil change) 400 for a year
Total: 985
things I didn't need from 'tinkering'
coilovers - KW Variant 1s - 750 ('tex)
20th AE brakes, rotors upgrade - 375 (samba.com)
new front and rear painted valences - 55 ('tex)
aluminum door pulls - 25 - (tex)
used hella black taillights - 100 ('tex)
rub strip - 10 - Waterfest
new GLI shifter boot and knob - 15 - ('tex)
conti tires - 450 ('tex)
Weapon R air intake - 60 ('tex)
Total: 1940
point is regular maintenance, even at high mileage won't come any where near what you put into it that you don't need! 'tex has great deals - shop carefully though.... Enjoy and welcome!

Re: New to VW (Bork)

Granted, that going from a Honda to a VW U have my worries but my VW are so much more fun to drive. I am happy with my decision. Just worried about the maintenance and little bumps down the road. So I will keep up with it and hope for the best, lol
