Re: Favorite "boring" new car under $30k? (jwaters943)

I like the looks of the Azeera, but I'd buy another Camry Hybrid if I had it all to do over again. Almost the same MPG as my Rabbit diesel. I still find it astounding that a car this large can take me from SLC to San Diego - getting 41 mpg.

Yawn inducing, I know, but it's more reliable than my Cuisinart!

Not bad for $25,200 IMO.

The new Skoda Superb. The interior and the tech is essentially an extended wheelbase Passat with slightly dfferent ambience. So its got more room, but the same dash stroker appeasing materials and the same new RNS510 available.
I think my favorite detail:

Its called Twindoor and is pretty much a trunk/hatchback combination.

that is not bad looking i think octavia is great ( we had bunch of them at work) to bad we never gonna see them state side

Acutally what I thought of when I saw the Superb in the magazine was that VW could potentially import or ( or build at their supposedly soon-to-come American plant) these Skodas as a VW, named the American version Passat or like a Quantum revival or something.
What I see is:
The Skodas, while could be had with the newest tech as an option, are designed with the last-gen VW electronics, and technoloy saving money, but sticking with a VW feel that Americans are used to. The interior, while not totally upscale is VWish enough for it to not scream "cheap."
The concept of a Superb is more of a comfort orientated springy sedan, more inline with American tastes.
I dunno, if it came, and could be built to a price of the current Passat, it might have the chance to get off with people looking for an Avalon-like car.

Never quite noticed this before, but for a transverse-engine front driver the Rabbit has quite a disproportionately long nose.

I'd say a FWD Audi A4 with a base 2.0L engine. They are reliable, extremely confortable, but you wouldn't want to do anything "sporty" in those.

Kind of an askew comment, but I noticed today that the Azera has a power rear window sunscreen. First time I ever saw such a thing.

Really? They're fairly common (e.g. RL, GS, Maxima, various MB models, etc.)

This may be a weird question, but here goes.....
What's everyone's favorite "boring" car under $30k?
By boring I mean a well-equipped, reliable, smooth (even numb), and decidedly unsporty transportation device.

The question is, why even bother?
There are enough choices in the market now that there's no real reason to buy a boring car even if your priority goes towards comfort.
Though, maybe it's just my age talking, I can't tell a difference in ride quality/quietness between, say, a Mazda 6 and a Camry - they're both so much smoother and quieter than anything I'm used to that it's all the same to me.
So, uh, I'd get a Mazda 6, or a Pontiac G8 if I needed something bigger.

That's a valid question. I suppose because not eveyone wants a noisy, stiff ride for their daily driver. Some prefer to be coddled and fly under the radar.
Just because you can't tell the difference in refinement between a 6 & a Camry doesn't mean there isn't a sizeable gap between the two.
