Are the chances of good of me going to autozone and picking one up for her Jeep Cherokee?

An alternator for a Cherokee will be pretty easy to find, although the ones for newer Cherokees are kind of expensive ($130 or so).

Re: FV-QR (Chris16vRocco)

If you don't know how to change a battery I would guess you wouldn't want to attempt the alternator.
Stick with things like washer fluid and gas.
edit: And how did you come to the conclusion that it was the alternator?

Well at one time I didn't know how to change headlights either, but I figured that out. Like I said I'm learning as I go along. As far as the battery goes I had an idea, but someone mentioned to me that it was harder than I thought a while back so I wanted to check here and make sure.
As far as the alternator she had one of her friends go and give the car a jump and it still wouldn't start.

True, and if you're buying from checker auto don't get the big one(they offer two ), it won't fit

So the 'friends' diagnosed the 'bad alternator' ??

Yeah pretty much. I'll call her and tell her to get them to take the battery to autozone and test it. Wouldn't the car start with a jump if it was just the battery?

Re: FV-QR (DiscoStu)

I would seriously check your fuses. Sometimes the fuse can go out on your first transmission and cause your car to act "dead". Now don't check your second transmission, cause it's always the first transmission that acts up

No. A completely depleted or shorted battery can prevent a jump start.
If its just depleted, letting it charge for a bit may may bring the 'dead' battery up to a level where it won't drag down the good car/battery and the car will start.
If its shorted (rare), the people jumping it would know pretty quick......

Re: My Friends Battery Just Died (HaterSlayer)

If she hadn't been so demanding of that poor battery for her personal pleasure, it would have had a much longer life.

Sometimes I question the things going on in the world today. Changing the battery ranks among the top 5 EASIEST things to do to your car, its up there with changing oil and putting fuel in...

Ya know, I'd *almost* agree with you. Except replacing the battery in moms 2k3 Dodge intrepid involved removing the airbox and upper intake, (to access the battery) then removing the passenger front wheel, removing the wheel well liner, and then sliding the battery out that way.
*****' thing took me an hour. I couldn't believe there was that much work involved, comapred to replacing it in my jetta.

FWIW- some auto part stores actually change the battery for free. Jump start the car and get it there.....
