This may have been talked about before, but with the search down I couldn't check, sorry:
Why does the 337 ECU cost substantially more than any other VW 1.8T ECU?
Image

The list price is $1690.00 and I was quoted a good price of $1521.00.
From what I can see any other ECU, whether it is an AWD, AWW, or AWP is in the neighborhood of $350-400.
WHY?? Is there a good reason for this? Is there something extraordinarily special about the 337 ECU? Is there something I am missing?
Thanks.

Re: Ripped off by VW (OutrGarage)

Well, considering they are limited edition ECus, yeah, they're going to cost more. Why do you automatically jump to the conclusion that VW is ripping people off? Any part like that that's produced in small quantities is going to be $$$.

Do you have nothing better to do than troll the 337 forum? Thanks for you're helpful response.

Re: Ripped off by VW (H22A-S EK)

Let's get back on topic.
The fact that the ECU is made in limited quanities is most likely the answer but a $1700 to $400 difference seems extreme to me.
I may be very naive when it comes to the inner workings of the electronics of our cars, but isn't the only difference between our ECU and an AWP ECU is the way they are configured/programmed.

Sorry for assuming that you are what it says in your sig. My bad. I thought you might know the answer to the origanal question.

From what I remember reading in an earlier post there is a defferance between the 337 ECU and the other AWP ECU's. I can't remember and thought you would know from what your sig says. Again sorry for assuming

I think you have to many personal problems to list. Maybe you sould go over to ClubSi for some help.

Last time I checked I didn't question your right to express your oppinion.
I think you need to take your own advise.

Re: Ripped off by VW (OutrGarage)

it's because the 337 ecu is completely diff from the other cars....the motherboard is not the same...sure it supports a similar program...but the internals are different...and I'm sure there aren't many of them around yet....that could be for the high price
it may be the design they could be using in the up coming models..who knows

Re: Ripped off by VW (OutrGarage)

I see no reason for the additional cost either. I seriously doubt that VW had to "re-tool" or do anything special to create this batch of ECUs for the 337.
I don't nessecarily agree with the thread title tho, it's not like you have to purchase an additional ECU for your 337 and if you do get ripped off it's of your own choosing. I will be chipping mine (APR) but I certainly will not be purchasing a ECU even if i only costs me $400.

Re: Ripped off by VW (BoxCar)

First, If I recall the price you were quoted, $1520, is lower than the price used to be. If I recall I think someone was quoted over $2000 for a 337 ecu a few months ago. Maybe they are starting to come down in price.
Second, has anyone actually tried putting a regular AWP ECU in a 337. I know a couple people have mentioned that they would like to try this, but I havent heard of anyone actually doing it yet. It is possible, but I admit doubtful, that the AWP ECU would work fine in a 337. If anyone has any friends with a AWP, see if you can try it out.

Even if it did work, I would think that it would likely show up on the diag as an incorrect ECU. That would make it a pointless exercise since the only reason I know to purchase a spare ECU is for pre-warranty work swap-outs. Am I wrong?

I can understand that ^^^.
I still may chip my car, but I liked that fact with a separate ECU I can return my car completely back to stock. Several months ago when was considering trading in my Jetta the first question all the dealerships asked was whether my car was stock or not. Because I had only minor mods exhaust, wheels, whatever I was able to return it back to stock. I would have liked to just give them the car as is but... After all was said and done the Blue Book value for my car was $13400 and they gave me $15000. It's about resale value.
Who knows I still may chip my car anyway? I just liked the options the separate ECU offered.

I did not realize they have different motherboards. I can't see any practical reason why they would be different? I would be much cheaper for VW to just alter the code.
I thought I was getting a normal 2002 GTI with a few cosmetic/handling/braking bells and whistles. If you are correct in saying that we have different motherboards, I guess not.
Thanks everyone for the help. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
