It was ok when one or two cars had it, but does every manufacturer need to have one car with a round headlight bulge(s)? Is it a popular design element that, as a whole, manufacturers fear not having a bulged headlight in their lineup?

some a very much dislike, such as the new jag's lights, and others i actually like, such as the LGT headlights.
meh, its a trend that will eventually die out just like the fins from the '50s.

Those don't bother me (as much) as say the headlights on a new Honda Accord where they protrude out from the body.

x2 i read the title with the new Accord in mind, it's WAY more hideus than the OP's idea

yes, that is another type of bulge, and it is very ugly.

Indeed. If it's a smooth transition it actually looks kind of nice. If it's just a random semi-circle protruding into the bumper, no.

Re: (SkilledDriver)

well if the OP has such dis like for headlight bulges, what about the oem "euro" tails aka round red and clear, on just about every american car currently offered.

Great post. Its old already, its ugly for the most part and ridiculous.
Was the last gen Corolla the first to start this trend? Then I remember the refresheed Acura TL got it and then everyone does it.
Looks ridiculous to me.

I don't have a problem with them, they can come handy when you can't find a place to put a cup of cofee.

I hate pretty much every modern styling theme, including, but not limited to: bulgy headlights, stretchy-headlights-to-the-a-pillar, high beltlines, bulgy tail lights, and melt-o-slab sides.

I believe it may have started with the Aztek. The Corolla got it in 2002 and the TL got it in 2002 as well.
As far as the actual headlight bulges, they're really a necessity as a result of the car's styling (and the designers trying to have sleeker bodies) and the realities of heat from headlights. You'll notice it only happens on cars with non-projector headlamps. The Accord Coupe does not have a bulge...it has projectors.
