That's the amount as of last night that the OPP and Metro cops have handed out in tickets since the blitz started six weeks ago.
Eight Million Dollars worth of tickets. So far they've written up over 80,000 tickets with an average fine of $100.
Sounds like a cash grab to me.

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (hawc)

oh yah, and how many murderes and criminal cases have they solved in that time span.... i bet you not much.
what a joke police department we have.
i got a ticket a couple months ago for going 55 in a 40 zone and my insurance is nailing me to the wall because of it.
it was an absolutely useless ticket, total waist of time, and absolute bullcrap. this is what cops do during the day??? stand on a corner, hold a retarded laser gun and hand out tickets (probably while eating donuts)
half the time i dont even see cops signal when i see then driving and change lanes, can i stop them and give them a ticket???
nothing to be proud of people, toronto's cops are useless

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (mpmark)

Yeah they always talk about how speeding kills.
I don't konw if I buy it.
Yes the car was in motion when it crashed so technically "speed was a factor" as they always like to say, but so what?
There was also a spare tire in the trunk and floor mats in the car. So were spare tires and floor mats also a factor because there were involved.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, most of the time the areas they hand out tickets it's perfectly safe to speed. They target those areas not because they're school zones, but because it's only natural that any reasonable driver will let his speed increase a little.

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (hawc)

I guess now that 80,000 fines have been handed out there won't be as much aggressive driving ... oh no wait ... they never bothered to deal with what they had the blitz for, they just taxed anyone that they could easily catch.

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (ShortBus Driver)

I wonder how many more "public servant" jobs were created because of this blitz? Im sure that more people are now needed to process all of these tickets...........lawyers...........man, gotta love this kind of thing huh?
So, how much "profit" do you think this will produce for whoever gets this cash (police force/province/city...???). If they want, they can put a portion of that towards paying off my OSAP!

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (ShortBus Driver)

Apparently it hasn't made a dent in the number of people speeding. The article I read said that speeding is actually up since they started the blitz.
These speed traps are basically just toll booths.
Very, very expensive toll booths.

Can you imagine if 80,000 people all decided to take it to court instead of just paying it. It would literally shut down the court system and then they'd realize how stupid they're being.

I say go for it! That would just kill the court system! And then they have the gall to say they have no money

Couldn't agree more... I thought I was the only one who thought that way!

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (RQtechVR6)

i agree... speeding tickets are a waste of time under most circustances. i would think that 90% of speeding tickets are total crap. however, they are easy to spot, easy to prove in court and its a clean conviction. the real crimes on the road would require hard work by the police department, not too mention that cutting off and changing lanes however one pleases, is exactly what they do themselves. the system sucks, but what can you do? i picked up this form from the transportation minestry once where you write downt he information of a car that has done something dangerous and you send it in, the cops then send taht person a warning in the mail. id love to see everyone in the city fill out these things for the cops. it wont do anything cause they will dump them in the trash, but at least it will slow their system down reading the forms of thousands of people

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (B_artman)

Damn, no love for the police eh? Its funny though, because these blitz dont do anything, people will still speed, its crazy here in the GTA, you could be doing 15-20 over and still get passed on most roads. You go to AB/SK/MB and even some states and people dont speed as much, and I dont see what the cops do there thats any different. I guess its the pollution in the GTA that is messing us up.

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (CL_POWER)

Since speeding is so rampant it makes one wonder if the speed limits are set too low. They seldom stop you on the 4 series roads if you are under 20 over and traffic moves around 120-130.
Around town if the limit is 50 or 60 then I try to do it, but it isn't easy. School zones though are 40 and for that I will slow down, however they should have time limits for when the kids are really using them. What good is a 40 zone at 10pm or 2 in the morning? That doesn't make sense and police who are there and ticket during non school hours are only putting in hours and wasting our time - and getting our money too but...

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (V6R)

I have a set of Audi HID's installed on my '97 GTI.. A cop pulled me over the other day to "inform" me that my headlights were too bright.... So, he gave me the speech about safety and all that kinda good stuff... And then he asked me, do you have any questions about the laws of headlights. And I answered, "No, but I noticed that you have a burnt out headlight and 3 brakes light bulbs out!!!!"
Needless to say, I didn't get a ticket!

What?! That is totally ridiculous!!! I'm originally from B.C., and the laws there says that the 30km/h speed limits at school zones and parks only applies from dawn to dust on the weekdays, and it also isn't in effect during the summer when school's out. Are you sure the rules aren't the same here in Ontario?

Re: $8,000,000 in Tickets! (ungr8fulvr6)

My take on speeding....
Speed limits have not changed in the last 50 years.
Techniques in road construction have - they are constructed using more advanced techniques than fifty years ago. This means a better surface that lasts longer.
We all know that designs of automobiles have changed in the past 50 years. This includes everything from brakeing and tires to safety equipment. This group of people are certainly aware of this fact. In fact, the credit card companies love us for the fact that we always have to have the newest performance parts and the best performance parts.
Which leads me to the conclusion that current speed limits are below what road and vehicle construction has evolved to. We have cars that handle better, stop better, have safety features... etc (Airbag??, my 1956 dosen't have seatbelts.)
Therefore, we should be allowed to speed. NO! In fact we should be required to exceed the posted speed limits as this would get us to our destination quicker thereby reducing the congestion of traffic!!!!!! (INSERT MANIACLE LAUGH HERE.)

I just had a court date a month ago, and I used POINTTS to represent me. The guy said that only 13% of people fight their tickets. So you do the math 80,000*13%=10,400. Thats still a lot of people going through corts, but I think they can handle it. BTW speed limits in general are set too low, except for school zones. Is there anything we can politically to try to get speed limits increased?

Yes, but while this is true, you must also accept that the human body has evolved little if at all over the last fifty years, so the maximum force that the human body can withstand has remained the same. And as such, increased speed limits would mean more devastating accidents.
Scenario 1:
City driver, speed limit is 50, on average people do 65, you're at a stoplight, some retodd doesn't see the light is red slams on the brakes and comes careening into you at 50, large momentum = large damage.
Scenario 2:
Now, imagine that the speed limit is 70, people will still speed, since the fines are the same for doing 85, as they were for doing 65 in a 50, and hey, they can get there even faster now!! Once again, he doesn't see the light is red until the exact same point. The time it takes him to slam on the brakes is the same, but in that time period, he has covered more distance travelling at 85 than at 65, he then has less time to decelerate from 85, and since the velocity is higher in this case while he is braking than in the other case, he will travell the distance to your car in a much smaller amount of time, keeping the velocity of the car even higher, so, instead of hitting your car at 50, he can only slow down 8 km/h and slams into the back of you at 77km/h, 27 km/h faster than in scenario 1.
I know you were just trying to have some fun with your statement, and I appreciate that, but people still drive like morons, and even with higher speed limits, morons will speed.
Make your choice

[edit] forgot to comment on the original topic:
These blitzes would be much more effective if they happened one day at a time, randomly...don't inform the media of a safety blitz, and pull people over for being stupid, not for speeding, look at the cars, look at the drivers, go after those who don't look like they have the money, it may be a bit more immoral, but it will hit those people harder than the rich tards who pay off a $320 like its pocket change....hit em where it hurts.
