so ive always wondered... around town.. for the people with 6spd cars do u guys ever make it a point to drive around in 6th? is their a big difference on gas saving if u do or dont? i find that around town usually ill only be able to get to 4th-5th gear and cruise around before i have to slow down again for lights... and if i go thru all the gears i have to constantly shift around 1500 rpms

Re: gas saver on the 6spd?? (DuB_MaNG)

well, i never make it to 5th gear in my GTI when im driving around town.... and i NEVER make it to 6th in my jeep (yes, my jeep has 1 more gear then my gti)..but even if i do i cant say i notice a difference in gas mileage

Re: gas saver on the 6spd?? (DuB_MaNG)

I've always understood that the top gear ratio on the 6 vs 5 speed transmissions are the same. With that said, in my 5 speed I always pop it into 5th at 45 if I'm on a longer stretch between lights. I don't notice any difference though. Still average 21-22mpg in the city no matter what.

As far as just dropping it into the lowest gear possible, if your just coasting might as well just shift into neutral, if you have to give it any gas to keep going your gonna burn more gas because the engine has to work harder in that lower gear to keep it going, your better to just have to lightly touch the throttle in a lower gear instead of giving it more in a higher one.

It comes down to RPM and throttle position - I get my best gas mileage when keeping the car between 2.5-3k rpm in 6th on the highway, with very little throttle adjustment.
I love my S-AFC II in the Z though - I can watch down to a tenth of a percentage what my throttle position is. (Not like mileage is every good in that car... )
In reference to the OT... I never get above 4th or rarely 5th on surface streets, but that also has to do with the average speed / number of cars in the downtown area.

to save gas is it better to ride around in 5th with more throttle keeping the rpms low or putting it in 4th and having the rpms a little higher but easier on the throttle?

always wondered the same thing... ive got an 08 6speed mx5 and whenever i cruise through towns im like... hm 5th or 6th haha... bump for an answer! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

alright thanks! yea cuz on a normal day to day driving i NEVER make it to 5th gear anyways. i just always put it in 5th at least just cuz i always thot higher gears means less gas... but that makes alot of sense in that its better to be in a low enough gear to just barely need to blip the throttle rather than a higher gear at lower speeds and having to press the gas all the way down.... THANKS!

furthermore considering i have a vr6 i will gladly drive around in 4th gear around town! altho 3rd gear mid rpms is the money sound...

To Corallini081 and Kavanagh If ya look up a bit, you'll see it is much better to sit in fourth and barly touch the throttle instead of going to 5th or 6th for that matter even when you would have to give it more throttle. It may not sound like the engine is working more in the lower rpm but since you are out of its prime power range it has to work harder and thus sucking more gas to get the job done.

Re: FV-QR (membersonlymk4)

I just follow the owners manual. According to the book, as long as your not cruising with your rpm's below 1500, you're being efficient. As a result I get into 6th all the time and I usually get around 30-31 mpg with mixed driving (about 50/50 city/highway). http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: FV-QR (GLIRyder)

If im on flat roads around town, i will be in 6th at around 35 mph....i think the owners manual actually recommends 27 mph, lol. Then again, i have a vr6, not sure if the 1.8ts are different but im guessing the vr has more get up and go when its running at only 1500 rpms. I def notice a difference using 6th around town.

ok so on my lunch break i tested this too... and yea in 6th goin around 35-40mph if i gas it it still has a bit of pep to it... i dont think its enough to climb to around freeway speeds but their would be no problem gettin to 55-60
