VW hit a home run as far as I'm concerned...
But why is the roof tilt only? Not enough room for the large roof to slide in?

Can't slide inside... just like the Audi A5 & the new Scirocco.
I suprised they did not go after the "spoiler" style sunroof route.

Bet this discussion has taken place on those sites as well....
I think I would rather of had a "regular" moonroof as the design than this.. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Agreed-- I think I'd get sick of having to respond to clients' requests by saying, "Yes, it is cool, but no it doesn't open any more than that. Yes, really."

so would I or no sunroof
There is the trend for panoramic sunroofs. Unfortunately, VW/Audi half-assed it.

Yesterday I spoke with someone at Webasto USA about the feasibility of adding one of their aftermarket roofs to a CC Sport. Eventually I got to speak with someone who had some interesting things to say.
First, he said it would be no problem to add one of their 900 or 700 series roofs to the car. We discussed the "normal" sunroof in the Mercedes CLS, and he said that they make roofs in at least 3 sizes in each series, and like the M-B the CC would require a smaller retracting roof to interface with the roofline contours.
The other thing the guy mentioned was that VW/Audi contracted for a the panoramic roof for the CC and the A5 at the same time to bring the cost down. They could have went with a conventional roof on the CC but chose to use the "panoramic vent" (as he called it) to give it some unusual "flair", like the 4-seat arrangement does. He said that the CC is far too up-market for a manufacturer to consider an over the roof spoiler type sunroof. VW never considered it, he said.
I have not been a fan of aftermarket roofs, but Webasto's are the same quality as their OEM stuff. One thing the guy I spoke with (who was a VP of something) stressed was that the installer is the make-or-break ingredient when adding a sunroof. A good installer can make the external support ring look like it's from the factory, while others will deliver a job looking like it's taped to the car and has messed-up drains.
This was an interesting alternative they offer, which also retracts into the roof (on a Passat Wagon from their website):

Personally I never open my sunroof just vent it so I dont have an issue with this, but I can see where some might be upset.

If he said that... then I guess the Audi Q7 to be downmarket from the cc.
imo, panaramic tilt only is satisfying the trend for panaramic sunroofs--- I rather get a cc or a5 (and Scirocco) without it--- and you get the benefit of less unsprung weight.
In addition to the spoiler style, there is also another folding arrangedment for sunroofs, found on the Pontiac G6 sedan and Benz B-class. Cooler and more expensive and prone to leaks.
the webasto TVS is interesting... maybe I'll get one, who knows??? But it does have the one-up on Subaru for the double tilt, other than that, it works simlar to that on Subaru Legacy/Outback wagons.

Before you spread your pearls of wisdom - maybe you should learn what "unsprung weight" is:
The mass of the suspension, wheels or tracks (as applicable), and other components directly connected to them, rather than supported by the suspension. (The mass of the body and other components supported by the suspension is the sprung mass.) Unsprung weight includes the mass of components such as the wheel axles, wheel bearings, tires, and a portion of the weight of driveshafts, springs, shock absorbers, and suspension links. If the vehicle's brakes are mounted outboard (i.e., within the wheel), their weight is also part of the unsprung weight.
