Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (trbogti)

yay, what the world really needed was yet ANOTHER automatic transmission. too bad they couldn't have spent all that energy and research on a sequential 6-speed with a clutch, rather than reinventing the slushbox.

Agreed.

Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (Obin Robinson)

Dude, what are you smoking? This isn't just 'another auto.' It has no torque
converter, allows driver selected gearing, and rapid shifting. It's an inprovement
in concept over SMG owing to the second clutch. It doesn't sacrifice power,
allows great driver control, and allows shifting faster than you can complete
with a regular six speed. And its optional! I think it's great!! This is real progress,
not just some new autobox with a shift control.

Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (trbogti)

it is just another great autobox. even the SMG in the E46 (whcih was said to tbe SOOOO Much faster then the 6-speed) was slower then a 6-speed Manual E46 in every accel test that was done....with the SMG tried in all 6 modes. European Car tested this E46 M3 SMG-vs-E46 M3 6-Spd. i hate Slush Box cars http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

I think you missed the point of that test. Yes, the SMG was slower from a standing start, mainly because of some weird lag around 5 mph and even then it wasn't too much slower. But they did say that the SMG equipped car was the HANDS DOWN winner on a road course. Yes, it's less involving than the traditional manual tranny, but it is faster on a road course because it is one less thing to worry about. No having to match revs when downshifting, etc... Reread the article and then come back and talk about how much you hate slushboxes.

As for the new tranny in the R32, I'm excited to see VW pursuing some racing-type technology. What people don't understand is that these types of trannies aren't slushboxes. They're manual transmissions with computer controlled clutches. To me, the term slushbox refers to any transmission with a torque converter. I can't wait to see how many people complain that this new tranny doesn't shift smoothly.

Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (Jordi)

i didnt bother to read the article, just looked at the comparisson box's..and from what i saw...SMG equip'd car was slower in every accl test, not to mention shift time was also slower then the manual..this done with the SMG in every mode aswell. basically it takes away from drivers feel and accels/switchs gears slower....not something i want. like i said...i hate Slush Box's

Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (trbogti)

This isn't "new" at all. Audi engineers came up with this from scratch and it was used on their IMSA racing cars along with some Sport Quattro rally cars BACK IN THE 1980'S....
New ? NO
Refined for the street ? MAYBE

Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (trbogti)

I marvel over damn near all types of autoboxes even though I prefer manuals.
I guess it's the engineering curiosity in me... I think it's simply cool that man can engineer mechanisms like this. Now if they could only get beyond ICEs and 25% efficiency.

That's why the article says "the world's first dual-clutch gearbox in a production car" IMSA cars and rally cars are a far cry from street cars.

Re: New transmission to debut on R32 (trbogti)

Porsche also used this in the 956 race cars, the PDK transmission. Audi used it in the S1. I'm not a big fan of auto transmissions, but this one has some real credibility. Let's wait and see before we get all up in arms....

i am all for clutchless manual. do u really think u can lap a circuit faster in a clutch'ed car or a (for instance) SMG equipped car? well, Formula one drivers doesn't

does shifting a car with SMG take more skill than shifting one without it? it is more fun to watch someone race because they possess skills that are borderline superhuman... or it is more entertaining watching a marginal driver go fast because he has traction control, automatic transmission, and more technology than the space shuttle?

Obin where does it start then? What level of technology are you happy with? Are they allowed to have syncros in their transmissions or do they have to rev-match every gear? Are they allowed to have ABS or do they have to modulate the brakes? Are they allowed to have speed sensitive steering (as many do) or no? I think that too many people are too down on technology becuase it "ruins the driving experience" Honestly yes I like manual transmission, but new technologies only help us go faster better. I'm not going to shun them simply becuase its cool to hate automatics.
ABS, Power steering, power brakes, drive by wire, ALL OF THESE put a computer or machine between the driver's input and the actual device or event. SMG is another one of these, but since it takes the precious clutch lever away its EVIL. I think you're

Please show us all where the torque convertor is located in this diagram??

...then you can call it a slushbox. Since you won't find one you might want to quit making yourself look silly.
BTW - Were you this upset when they took your typewriter away and gave you a computer??

well, show us where the clutch pedal is in this photo?

i go by a simple definition:
manual = i do the shifting
automatic = car shifts gears AUTOMATICALLY without me asking it to: either through computers, hydraulics, electronics, pneudraulics, or torque converters
in the end, you only still need one leg/foot to drive it. seems like we can lump SMGs, craptonics, multitronics, nissan-tronics, and all the other "tronics" into the group of "no clutch pedal in car". call it an automatic, call it whatever. i just know i wouldn't buy one.
