Call me slow but Im new and I keep reading about this AAZ stuff and cant quite seem to get on board. Help.
Also, what from a 1.9 td can be put on a 1.6 td. and why and to what benifit IE head gaskets and stuff like that?

Re: AAZ ? & 1.9td to 1.6td questions (T.D. TUNER)

AAZ is a canadian and european 1.9 IDI engine. It is mechanically controlled like the older 1.6s.
The turbo is an upgrade because it is smaller, and the metal headgasket is an upgrade for hydro heads because it can hold more boost.

--water pump is the same.
--1.6 Injector pump will bolt on and make good power.
--1.6 turbo will bolt on and make more power.
--1.6 turbo pan will bolt on-to includ manifold
--1.6 TD intake will bolt on
--1.6 flywheel will bolt on 190-200-210mm clutch kits 210 obviousy bigger.
--brackets and belts will bolt up.
--PS pump and AC will mount up
--mounts will bolt upl
the bad.
--need AAZ valve cover
--need longer aaz injector lines
--need AAZ vacuum pump
--need AAZ injectors
--1.6TD Timing gear cover requires modification to mont

Re: AAZ ? & 1.9td to 1.6td questions (DogDiesel)

so the 1.6 parts are an upgrade for the 1.9 or are you saying these parts come from a 1.9 and bolt up to a 1.6 for better performance?
Let me help clarify, I have a 1.6 td and am trying to figure out what can be put on to help perfromance.

Actually, now I see what you want. I replied as to what 1.6 parts will bolt on a 1.9. Here's a summary of what is good from a 1.9 on a 1.6.
Nothing.
The 1.9 has more @ 300 more cc and gets a little power from the longer stroke, etc, but otherwise the 1.6TD was a great engine.

Actually, what is good from a 1.9 on a 1.6.

actually.., I would say, the block would be good (excluding potential problems with the crank pulley, which I've never had a failure)
I really like the 300CC for xtra torque in my Caddy (especially when towing a trailer) and it is good in Vanagons and Vanagon Synchros. I have a 1.9IDI in an A2 Jetta, and it is 'better' than 1.6NA, but not better than a 1.6 TD (for a car application). I can never seem to get better that 42 mpg w / 1.9 IDI
For a car w/ 1.9 I would use the turbo off a 1.6; for a truck / vanagon the 1.9 turbo (smaller, faster spool, but less overall boost)
The metal head gaskets are a plus for TD's (Hyd)...
I use 1.6 hyd heads on my 1.9's to enable 1.6 manifolds and Valve covers.

I disagree. The 1.9 turbos (less the K03) are excellent upgrades for stock boost levels and up to ~18psi on the 1.6. It really wakes up the bottom end.
The serp setup isn't bad either. Just make sure you get the clutched alt pulley.
The only reason I don't like the K03 is because I have never seen a used one that didn't need to be rebuilt. They are so small that they are always spooled up and because of that, they just don't last. Mind you most of the cars I've taken them off of have over 250k kms on them.
