Re: 1987 Cabriolet! (Ownza)

Welcome to the vortex! In addition to your Bentley (a very wise and invaluable investment), be sure to check out http://www.Cabby-Info.com if you haven't already discovered it. As for transmission-related info, take a look here: http://www.brokevw.com/. There is probably a DIY clutch article somewhere but I haven't a link to one saved. While replacing the clutch, it's a good opportunity to replace various seals and the throw-out bearing, too, while everything is accessible.
As for the carpet, it should fit beneath the door sill trim strips. I'm not aware of any clips, etc. so it was likely glued in both locations you're concerned with. I'm sure someone will chime in with something more specific... Good luck with it and let's see some pics!

Re: 1987 Cabriolet! (native-texan_in_tn)

The Doors sills actually have clips that fasten to the carpet, and then over the metal tab of the sill. The plastic sill plate covers them.
None around the ebrake it is that "humane mouse trap glue" crap.
For taking it out
see: It for a automatic, but for dropping a tranny its the same save for the location of the starter and the flex plate.

For the throw out bearing:

To hold the pressure plate:

Lastly don't forget to grease the brass button on the plate.

Re: (vdubbugman53)

i was just leaving it as a url at first since i wasnt sure if there was a restriction on pic sizes

next time ill do the /img and take them at smaller resolutions haha
and dont mind those horribley rusted rims!

I have better ones for my normal tires http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (bspaulding)

Yes, a wee bit smaller resolution pics would be a good thing... I could have sworn my poor laptop grunted when I opened the post this morning... <chuckle>

But you found the extra bracket and they're displaying fine now. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Don't worry 'bout your rust and crud for there's more than one of us that can relate well with such issues. My '89 began in similar condition with a much rougher looking top, as well, but it's been progressing relatively well from the days of being a $400 car, even if there are those occasions when I'd like to add it to the Cumberland River as a fish attractor!

Thanks, Brian, for clearing up the carpet fastening question. I haven't paid mine much attention yet since it's been so far down my list!

Re: (bspaulding)

ooooo! good thinking on the velcro

my car was a 500$ car
Image
but iv put a lot of money in it (im up to like 1300-1400 i think )
Image

i only have a couple of big problems still (axle boot or something or other doesnt have a clip on it so its slinging oil/stuff, some how i have a small coolant leak that ends up being around my oil filter...
my heater blower decides when it will turn on and when it wont, the P.O. cut the front springs,
Image
clutch, need to re-key my trunk/gas cap, need almost ALL weather stripping
Image
)
and lots of little doo-dads

lol! what are my back seats supposed to look like? and they didnt orig come with the front seats right?

Your back seat is original, your front seats appear to come out of a rabbit or jetta, possibly even a scirocco.
