I got one a few weeks ago and go to court for it in a couple weeks. Wouldn't that imply that I was racing?
Here is what happend. It was a couple days after some snowfall and there was a lot of sand on the road. I usually go fairly fast off the line at stop lights when I'm the first. But I just spun on all that sand and squealed the tires. I quickly let off but next thing I know a cop going the other way turns around and pulls me over. I thought I was just going to get a yelling at for squealing the tires. But nope hands me a 12pt speed exhibition ticket, even though I never left first gear? Does that seem right to anyone? Being someone who has had a few legit speeding tickets I probably will get hosed in court, but I don't know how I was exhibiting speed at 30Mph in 45mph speed limit.

Re: Anyone ever had a "speed exibition" ticket? (Silent Bob)

Usually they call it a "stunting" ticket. Spinning tires, doing powerslides, wheelies on motorcycles, they all fall under this category, and yes, they do carry a lot of points.

Did you spin the tires excessively (be honest)? Its not about the speed you were going in this case, its about "showing off". A 12pt ticket? I think there is a ten point maximum in Vermont... Hope you have a different system.

a lot of times if you do a brakestand and leave a ton of rubber, they can charge you by the foot for destruction of property (the asphalt)..
were you doing this?

(1) Hire a lawyer
(2) Your lawyer should be able to make the point that there was sand on the
road, and so you "Just lost traction."
On your own, you'll probably get annhilated. But this is an easy ticket to fight
because the terms are vaguely designed.

My brother got a ticket for neglegence once when he spun the tires. $480...I don't know the point value though. Either way, seems kinda harsh.
I'm sure you could at least get yours knocked down a little bit, given the conditions.

He's right. This is worth the money it'll cost for the lawyer's time.
And yeah, that's pretty severe. I know in bad weather I constantly find myself spinning tires in order to get traction on the pavement below sand and slush.

I was practicing my standing starts at a light one night

. Got a nice launch, barely hazing the tires, no smoke, no noise, no rubber laid down. Never got over the speed limit. Got a ticket for "laying drag", which is a misdemeanor in Georgia. It is only a 3 point ticket though. But as soon as the DA entered my driving record as evidence against me (several speeding tickets), case closed.
Get a lawyer.

Re: Anyone ever had a "speed exibition" ticket? (Silent Bob)

I've gotten a warning for that on the base I work at, and this was in my Dodge Dynasty. Basically, I was pissed because I was sitting at a stop sign for minutes on end, and when an opening arrived, I accelerated harder than usual. The tires were pretty work, and squeled the for part of my turn. I got flagged over (they were down the road doing parking direction for an event), but let me off with a warning.
I'm with them, get a lawyer, because of the sand and lack of traction.

Re: Anyone ever had a "speed exibition" ticket? (Egz)

Another "lawyer" vote. You could say the exact same thing that your lawyer would to the judge and the judge would just slap you down. But if a lawyer says it then you have a pretty good chance. Traffic lawyers are my heros. They cost about as much as the ticket would, but you'll save in insurance costs in the end.

If it was a Denver cop, you must have been launching pretty hard. Denver cops aren't usually bored (like Greenwood Village or Englewood Police) and it takes something obvious to get their attention and write you a ticket. You say you were doing 30mph in 1st? I don't know about your car, but that's the very top of first for me. Sounds like you got caught red-handed.
edit: And as for exhibiting speed, you don't have to be speeding to do it.

Re: Anyone ever had a "speed exibition" ticket? (jerk)

It probably appeared as though I was launching hard but I really wasn't. Yeah my buddy's dad is a lawyer. He said that the law is pretty vauge so it doesn't really matter that I wasn't speeding. I already pay $300/month in insurance so I will probably be dropped from Sate Farm and have to get insurance for drivers with bad records. If I get the full 12 pts I will be one shy of losing my license.
It was the Douglas County Sheriff. I actually got pulled over for squeeling hard by the Greenwood Villige police at 1AM with 3 drunk people in my girlfriend's GTI and got off with a warning.
I think I was a victim of the b!tch cop on a power trip. Male officers seem to be more realistic, where females seem to have something to prove.

I made a left hand turn at a fourway intersection and squeeled em around the turn

Next thing i know i got the blueberries and cherries in my rearview. The officer...University PD...gave me a ticket for my overdue inspection sticker

Consider yourself lucky there....I've always had bad experiences with GV police.
