Driving on winter roads in summer tires is easy as pie.
Stopping, on the other hand, can get a little hairy.

Sez the man with a death wish...

I could have sworn it snowed in London in late October. I was in Northern Ireland at the time, and it seems to me it was all over the news.

Yeah it was sometime in the fall. During a global warming conference in London, too! Hehe, mother of all ironies....

Yeah I mean real snow though

This is the heaviest snowfall in 18 years, in the South East it was something like 10-12 inches overnight (generally when it snows in England its for one day a year and less than an inch). So yeah with so fewer gritters / equipment the roads were...interesting with only major routes clear. Central London was quiter than a Sunday today...not one single bus and most of the train network closed, most people skipped work...that's how crazy it gets when you don't have the equipment LOL.
I just laugh as I did a year in Ottawa and you realise that snow doesn't have to close a country down...but here there is just no justification for investing in the kit for something that happens once every 20 or so years.

When I was a kid I lived in Raleigh and an inch or two of snow had the same effect. No snowplows, etc, and people would put chains on their tires and drive around for days throwing sparks.

Re: Garage Your Italian Sports Car in Winter? You're a Big Girl. (Mikedav)

London's climate is similar to the Pacific Northwest. Marine influenced by the Gulf Stream so winters aren't quite as cold as the Northeasten US (which is a Continental Climate). London has also seen hotter summers, not too common there either (the Gulf Stream keeps the UK cooler in the summer). So while London may be rainy and dreary in the winter months like Seattle or Portland, snow is fairly rare. As for Raleigh, NC.... it just snowed 5+ inches there 2 weeks ago. At least they had salt and plows ready.

yo was anyone panicking when you guys had a snow day? lol

Are you kidding? The whole country has ground to a halt

We get proper snow so rarely that when a big fall like this happens we don't have the infrastructure to cope with it.
The airports are shut, half the trains aren't running, offices are deserted...
We're stuck at home because there's 2" of compacted snow on the lanes round the house and the Corrado just slides around like a hockey puck. The irony of the Audi Quattro being broken and covered in snow is not lost on me

No one has winter tires or snow chains, because they'd never get used most of the time. 5 days a year maybe in my bit of the country?

I saw an F430 out in snow about a month ago and it just made me smile. It's a car, just an expensive one. I'd drive one all year round http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

If London is anything like NYC, the garage fee in London probably costs more than the payment for one of those cars.
Is that a Convertible 360? http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

you know you have way too much money when... you're DDing a Ferrari in a snowstorm.

My guess its some punk who can barely afford to pay it and has only one car.
I thought London got snow like most other parts of Europe (obviously Alpine region but other parts like Germany). Weird.

Re: (strictlyA2)

My partner used to live in London, and says this is the first time there's been serious snow there in 18 years

Yet people are bashing the local authorities for not having snow plows
