Re: GF's 2.0 Funny Noise when Starting (Mr. Potato Head)

sounds like the traditional VW lifter noise. How many miles?
I had 2 dubs that clicked, now I have had 2 that don't. Similar mileage.
I believe it mostly has to do with frequency of oil changes and quality of oil used. My first VW was a '85 gti and it made that same noise from the time I bought it until I sold it. Never got worse in 60 000 km.
I suggest to use a quality oil ( I like synthetic, some don't) and the OEM filter.
I change every 5000 km.

Of course, the car has less than 1000 miles on it. And it is not a lifter noise. It is deeper like a diesel sounds and only for a second or two on startup. I only use Mobil 1 in my cars so this car will get quality oil as well. That is not the problem especially because it is brand new.

Just to let you know that you should not use synthetic oil until approx 6000 miles as the rings will not seat in with synthetic oil. As for the noise I woul put a oil pressure master gauge on it and check your pressures at startup and at temp

Re: GF's 2.0 Funny Noise when Starting (vwmechanic)

I will just take it to the dealer and let them check it out with that tip. Thanks. Also, a friend has a 2.0 Beetle and I think I heard it make the same noise when she started it too. Seems to be only while it cranks over and then it quiets down. Somewhat of a rough idle too. Is that normal? Maybe I am just used to my 24v.
