In an interesting move (if this is true), GM has changed its corporate name. I suppose that it would be one way to let "GM", as a subdivision of the new parent company, go bankrupt without dragging down the surviving brands and businesses. I suppose it would be possible to break contracts and shutter dealerships if "GM" does not exist anymore, while Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC soldier on, under the new corporation.

Re: GM Changes Its Name? (whitejeep1989)

Um, GM ASSET MANAGEMENT...not GM. Sheesh.

It's basically just a fund, otherwise known as the GM treasury.

Guys, click the link! GM, that big company that makes cars, is not changing their name. They are rebranding their internal fund to open it up to outside clients. Carumba.

Must have been in the works ever since they were angling for TARP money.

I didn't think hedge funds were eligible to receive TARP money. Are you referring to GMAC becoming a bank?

But are they corrosion resistant? I fail at teaching my visitors to sit.

Re: (3 Money Pits)

Why is it that when times are tough vehicle manufacturers force the UAW to renegotiate their labor contracts and make additional concessions on top of what they've already sacrificed but when AIG has labor contracts with its execs that stipulate paying them 165 million dollars in bonuses for doing a crappy job despite taking billions of dollars from the US Treasury their "hands are tied" and they have no choice but to pay out?

This is a little more thorough explanation. I will admit to overreacting, after reading the article linked in the OP. Its GM's asset management (pensions, 401Ks, etc...) division, that is changing its name to "Promark Global Advisors".
With this separate asset management fund in operation, would it be possible for GM to sell parts of itself to "itself"? Any Wall Street types know if this is possible?

GM: Government (Mis-)Management

Wait a minute. GM's current and past crop of private management did a far better job of screwing the company than the gov't will ever do.
Too much transparency and oversight with the feds now handling it to have the time of greed angle.
But I'll say that Rick should run for congress. He'd fit in perfectly.
