I'm not sure on how the "RX" nomenclature, but the 8 would lead me to believe that this is the successor to the RX-7.
On the other hand, I hear of rumors that Mazda is designing a "new" RX-7, and since the RX-8 is more of a "versatile" coupe with four-doors, maybe there is room for a two-door sports car as well.
So is the RX-8 the follow-up to the RX-7, or is it something different?

No, it is not. RX stands for Rotary eXperimental. The RX-8 is different than the RX-7, and the success of the 8 will dictate whether or not a new 7 is produced.

There were three RX7s. Each was a successor to only the RX7. There were RX2,3,4,5 but these weren't successors to each other (except maybe 3 and 4).
Try google.com if you want to know about these things. It's an incredible thing.

Thanks for the info, guys. I could have sworn reading somewhere that the RX-7 was a "successor" to the RX-3, so I was thinking that the RX was to Mazda as the Z is to Nissan/Datsun.

If you'll recall, the RX2, RX3, and RX4 sold side by side in '73 (first year for RX4 and last year for RX2). The RX3 stayed on until '78 when it was replaced by the RX7, both cars being called Savanna in Japan and Australia. The RX8 is not the successor to the RX7, but a continuation of the RX 4 door sedan concept that the R100, RX2, RX3, and RX4 all had as part of their lines.

If the RX-8 sells well and the engine turns out as good as it looks on paper then you can expect to see a turbo version of the Renesis engine coming to America wrapped in a new RX-7 body some time in the next 10 years.
<-- Fingers crossed
