TrueDelta has updated the results of its Car Reliability Survey to include owner experiences through the end of March 2009.
Owners of the 2008 and 2009 Jetta, Golf, and GTI have been reporting few repairs for these cars, 26 and 33 repair trips per 100 cars per year, respectively. This is Toyota territory. Earlier model years of the MkV have also been doing fairly well, with reliability near the average.
So--has VW turned a corner with these cars? If so, hopefully the trend continues with the MkVI.
A big thank you to everyone who helped make these results possible.

I had only 1 problem with my '08 R32 and so far only 1 problem with my '09 Jetta. Though, the '09 Jetta had to have the turbo replaced so that is a major problem.

I have had my 08 GLI for 13 months now and the only problems I have had are ones that were caused by the dealer when it was in for oil changes. I don't go to dealers now.

What problems did the dealer cause?

I have owned 7 VW Golf/GTI starting with a 78 Mk1 thru a 00 Mk4 now.
I have never had any significant reliability issue with any of these 7 cars.
Would seem to me that this idea that VW are not reliable is mostly myth.

The improvement with the 2.0T cars was likely from the switch to the CCTA "TSI" motor from the problematic BPY "FSI" motor.

Most likely so I have the FSI and was at the dealer 14 times for repairs in 3o months. On average that's once every 2 months. Sucks big time. I still have 2 thing that I know will fail for sure, DV and PCV. Also with my luck so far I am replacing the A/C compressor every year 2006, 2007, and 2008, hmmm I wonder what 2009 will bring.

It would seem that you are a complete idiot... mkaresh is from TrueDelta and they collect this data for a living.
Besides that, you are a troll and don't own a MKV so you have no business in a MKV reliability thread.
On topic- I've had my Rabbit since Aug. of '06, it's an early '07 model. I've also managed to rack up 53k... To date I've had no mechanical issues (despite my best efforts to break it) and the only other issue I've had is the window switch trim peeling.
All in all I get the feeling this is going to be solid like a tank for many more years.

Re: Has VW turned a corner with these cars? Updated Car Reliability Survey results (mkaresh)

It's important to note that the problems people have been seeing are generally minor. For example, the only problems my car has had are a broken windshield washer line and a dead keyless entry battery. It shows up as a "trip" in the truedelta survey, but it doesn't really make the car unreliable.
Sure there are a few lemons and people who have had to fix their A/C aren't happy, but it's great that VW has finally figured things out for the most part.

Fact of the matter is that the great majority of problems with cars in their first five years are minor--with just about any model.
It's also true that with just about any car you can have the back luck to get one that requires many minor repairs or even one major repair. If you're on a forum with thousands of members, there will be a few with such experiences.
We do post the descriptions of all reported repairs to the site, so it's possible to see the details behind all of the posted repair frequencies.
I'd like to provide a separate stat based only on serious repairs. But they are so rare among newer cars that this requires a larger sample size than I have so far in most cases.
In the future, when we have more people involved, we'll be able to provide more information. Just need to get there.

My 08 Rabbit was in and out of the dealership for the first 7 months that I owned the car. But it was for little minor things the biggest repair it got was the drivers side door seal leaking when it rained. Other then that I do have to agree with Blacksheepsquad that my little car is like a tank.

FSI or not, sounds like a lemon to me. I've owned 2 FSI's and not had a single issue with either.

Re: (electricme)

it's been 20k and I had 1 issue and it was just my ecu needed an update. Problem free since than.Maybe an occasional startup bog but that's about. it's been 10x better than my old MKIV

So happy this car has been so much more reliable

I've got just under 60,000 on my VERy early model 06 MKV GTI. It was purchased in March 06 and the assembly date was October of 2005. I have had very few issues. A few minor nuances (vibrations and steering wheel off center) but other than a turbo vacuum line that was replaced 4 days ago. I haven't had anything. Heck, I am still on original brake pads/rotors and only my 2nd set of tires.

I am very happy with my first VW EVER. Even the little stuff can't deter me from the fun this car is.

Thats a little harsh.

Last time I checked we are free to post in any forum/topic we choose.
I am on the NSX Prime board... dreaming of the day I dont have to see the above, http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Back on topic I have owned 1 MK3, 2 MK4's and 2 MK5's and havent had any real issues either. I also havent owned either more than 15k miles... yes I have an obsession/compulsion.

Re: FV-QR (XM_Rocks)

mostly minor problems, but enough of them for 2500 miles of ownership (1.5 months)
07 rabbit, 78,000KM
bought the car at 47k miles (76k km), at 48.5k (78k km) now.
-3rd+5th cylinder coils failed (first day)
-broken windshield at mirror attachment
-rear sway endlinks failed
-multiple stalls at idle (dealer cannot replicate, big surprise)
-both rear speed sensors failed
they are all minor, however all within 6 weeks and 4/5problems required a trip to dealership
10 years driving vw's and i've never been stranded; first tow with my mkV.

Re: (06TornadoGTIPete)

I'm with you tornado. I'm a 51K and still running original brakes. Original tires also. Everything is in the yellow, rear brakes are almost in the red but you gotta say that's excellent for that many miles. I have had a handful of various little problems but so far nothing serious. The power lumbar has been replaced twice and I'm sure it will break again but if that's it I'm ok with that. I also had an early version GLI. I bought it with around 9700 miles and had to get it towed the next day. It was a very odd thing that happened but they said the cable from the battery to the alternator was stripped not making a complete connection causing various misreads throughout the car from the climatic control to the dash ultimately losing power to the car. Since the replacement of the battery, alternator and all the cables that are included with the two I haven't had a problem since with that. The typical washer fluid line chaffing fix. I'm very concerned about the oil consumption which is common with these engines. Every 1300 I have to add a quart which doesn't sit well with me but apparently this is normal for this engine.
