On my local craigslist there is a 1995 Jetta (GL I believe) for $500. So I called them and they said the car is in great condition with 90k miles, it just needs a transmission. It was an auto anyways, so would it be worth it to find a manual transmission and swap it in? Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Re: Jetta, Needs transmission (Ace_772)

depends on the condition of the body..check for rust and all that crap..try and get it for 300 or 400$..swapping to manual is alot of work..but could be done..
even if you get it and then in the future dont decide to do a swap..you can still make money by parting it out http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

still doesn't mean anything. but provided it is clean then yeah that would be a good deal.

waste of money to put a junk yard auto of all things in it. find a cheap 5 speed and do the swap. there's quite a few things u need for the swap but its well worth it.

Re: Jetta, Needs transmission (BlueDevilCabby)

i really dont want to spend a lot of money on this. it would kind of defeat the purpose of getting it so cheap. but say i got everything i needed for the manual swap. would all of it just bolt it? and can anyone make a list of what i need for the swap?
im assuming ecu, shift linkages, pedal, master cylinder, center console..

the auto's are TERRIBLE in our cars. reverse is pry the worst issue with the 5 speeds.
u'll need the clutch pedal, coolant hose, linkage and shift box, transmission, transmission mount, clutch cable, shorter starter bolts, inspection plate between motor and tranny and a coolant thingamabob that attaches to the block? its wehre your upper rad. hose attaches to the motor.

Re: Jetta, Needs transmission (MK2SnowPilot)

If you have the mechanical 'know how' i would definantly buy it. 90k and it's an auto, which means it probably wasn't abused. The fact that transmission is dead is no surprise. 90k on a vw automatic is a pretty long life.

Re: Jetta, Needs transmission (reynolds9000)

well ive taken auto shop in high school for 2 years now and ive got another one coming next year. and about the only thing i havent done is pull the engine. but i think it will be pretty straight forward. oh yeah, my friends jetta has 136k on the auto trans. can anyone get a picture of the coolant flange and hose that i need. thanks.

you need the second one down. the automatic cars have a transmission cooler which has an extra outlet on the flange. manual tranmission cars do no have the cooler so there is one less outlet.
