have an 05 MKV Jetta 2.5L, just hit 60k and the cel has been on for the last couple hundred miles stating that my cat efficiency is below threshold. When I have time I'll take her in and see if they honor the 80k warranty on the cat and just replace it....if it really is the cat that's causing the issue which I hope because I can't afford a new O2 sensor right now.

Re: (flip2jetta)

I've had 2 major repairs and several minor ones in 40k miles. DSG failure leaving me stranded at work, and coil pack failure, leaving me stranded at work again.
I would classify my particular car as unreliable as reliability means it doesn't leave you stranded. Fail.

There are definitely other cases like yours, but the survey results suggets that this is at least not the average experience. Small comfort in your case, I know.

FV-QR

My 6th VW... and knock on wood, only two issues
1997 Jetta GT 2.0 - 20k miles, 0 issues
2002 Jetta Wagon 2.0 - 106k miles and counting, driver's window
2002 GTI VR6 24v - 48k miles, coil packs
2003 Jetta 2.0 - 24k miles - 0 issues
2004½ GLI 1.8T - 86k miles, 0 issues
2007 Rabbit 2.5 - 45k miles and counting, 0 issues
and my partner's cars
1996 GTI 2.0 - 95k miles, 0 issues
2006½ GTI 2.0T - 92k miles and counting, ECU went around 60k
That track record works for me... it is quite unfortunate that others have had issues, but so do all cars. It's just that those who have issues are more likely to be vocal about it. I don't run around every day creating "I have xx miles of issue-free driving" threads...
..and for those keeping track, that's over half a million miles (512k and counting) of driving Volkswagens, with 3 issues to report. Again, that works for me

Re: FV-QR (Green Hare)

VW's just aren't nearly as bad as people say they are. Lets face it, the people that hate on VW's for reliability issues drive Corollas. I'd rather push my VW Group product than drive a Corolla haha.
Aside from a very intermittent rattle, nothing wrong at all with my 09/07 build Jetta.
All my MKIV's had more problems, but aside from the coils, nothing worth crossing to the dark side. Never had the mythical window reg problem!

Re: Has VW turned a corner with these cars? Updated Car Reliability Survey results (mkaresh)

07 Gli 56000 kms had 4 major issues with the car, been to the dealership about 13 times to resolve these issues. VW mechanics just dont know how to troubleshoot, at least the ones I deal with. First issue recirculation flap motor on heater was busted, took 4 times for them to finally figure it out. Ice build up on drivers side door, they were nice enough to repaint the door uni black, my car is deep black, fixed right after 2 visits. My car's fan would start up in the dead of winter -30 celcius until the battery was dead, 2 more visits. Cold start missfires 5 visits, car is still in the shop I really hope this is the last time. Came from a MK4 VR6 before this, which I had no problems with.

06 GLI ... 25K on the clock and no major issues to date. All scheduled maintenance done by dealership (oil changes & tire rotation) ... all other performance work and setup done by NGP in VA.
Very happy with the GLI and mods done to it just made it even better ... german engineering at its best. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: FV-QR (JJJETTA)

When we have larger sample sizes we'll also measure the number of unsuccessful repair trips per car. It's possible that VWs, when something does go wrong, are harder to fix. I gather that the electrical systems are especially complicated.

Some seem to try to relate the premium electrical system in a VW to the more crude and basic systems in Asian cars.
Anyone that has worked on a VW system knows that they use very high quality components and the placement and retention of the harnesses and components is almost a piece of fine art.

Not sure whcih VW systems you're referring to, but the B4 Passats (my GLX included) had a widespread problem with substandard speaker wire harnesses, resulting in wires snapping where they pass into the door grommets. Not sure that was a "piece of art".

Well, not if my '09 JSW TDI is a typical sample. It developed a thunk when turning both left and right. After two dealer visits it ended up getting the entire left front axle assembly replaced under warranty last week. Not Toyota territory, still better than Yugoland.

I love my Rabbit, BUT it was great for the first year, then I've had quite a few problems with it:
- kinked washer fluid hose on the rear wiper resulted in a bunch of fluid being dump in the hatch (no big deal at all but still a dealer visit)
- Sensor failure (I think it was the RPM sensor, but I forget the definite name of it). Car died on the side of the road.
- Oil leak from the filter housing. I know this was caused by the technician changing the oil, but it still resulted in me having to go back to the dealer...annoying.
- Cooling fans had to be replaced, as one seized up.
- Alternator needed replacing.
- Car threw multiple cel's ranging from airbag to EPC. It died on the dealer's parking lot. Turned out to be the fusebox that sits on top of the battery shorting out.
I have no mods, don't drive it very hard, and have done all scheduled maintenance at the dealer.
The car is working fine now, and I hope this is all I'm going to have to worry about. I want to keep the car for a while but if this keeps up for the next year that I'm under warranty I don't think I'll be able to keep it without giving myself a ton of repair bills.
We'll see. I do still love my Rabbit.

RE:my list of problems

I just got my 2007 GTI back, 26,000 miles on the odo, after I had the typical AC compressor failure. My earlier major problem was a spun bearing in the manual transmission, although I lived with an annoying noise for over a year, it caused no trouble for me, and was repaired last fall (even the dealer admitted that the noise was not normal).
Oil consumption is probably around 1 qt per 2000 miles, not a big deal.

Re: RE:my list of problems (fhohio1)

I have owned my '09 Wolfie for less than two months. In less than two months this is what I have had to deal with:
1) The rear pass. door window fell inside the door the day I got it home. Dealer found that the track was installed upside-down in Mexico. Was not detected before delivery even though the dealer had the car on their lot for over 5 months. Their Pre-Delivery Inspection procedure failed. Repair took one full day. Dealer claimed my car also had a check engine light and they found that the fuel trim was running too rich They said they needed to keep my car for another week or so. I protested their claim since I never saw the Check Engine light on (their service report claimed I showed it to them)! When I looked at the dash, it was now off. They said they reset the system.... okay... so I asked them to recall the fault code. These lying clowns couldn't produce it. I left with the car in disgust.
2) I received a "Safety Recall Notice" from the NHTSA and sent by VW. The torx head bolts around the inner axle joints have been found to fall out, causing the axle shafts to fall off the car creating a severe safety risk or possible death to the driver and their occupants.
3) DSG transmission is suffering from a malfunctioning Mechatronics Unit..... this defect is now the focus of yet another NHTSA safety investigation since they are receiving about a dozen complaints each DAY! Cost $4500 min... to the poor souls who are out of warranty... length of time car needs to be in service? 1 to 2 months!!!..... shall I continue?
