Re: k04 question (black maqic20th)

a k04-001 bolts right up to the stock manifold and downpipe...but if you are going stage 2...or even stage 2+ i would get the k04-001 with high flow manifold that CTS turbo sells for a darn good price. get a 3 inch exhaust if you dont already have one, an FMIC like a eurojet street series, audi tt225 maf housing, 380cc injectors and get unitronic stage 2+ software which is meant for a stock motor with the upgrades i listed above...I have researched some to do a reliable stage 2 or 2+ setup and that is my conclusion right there....maybe spark plugs that are a heat range colder as well...but talk with Clay from CTS and the unitronic guys...they are a great help.
good luck
if you wanted a k04-20 or 21 i think it is...that is the turbo from the audi tt225...you will need to find an exhaust manifold from that audi tt...sometimes that can be a pain in the ass

if he doesn't have $3000 + then a k04-001 is the way to go. trust me, some make really good numbers with them.

I would love to see the dynos
You might get to 250 but it just a spike, no good power.
If you are going with a K04, go with the 02x series. An 01 series is only good for 10-15 hp

Re: k04 question (1ThumbPhotog)

No one's hating. Most who say "no" have run the turbo before (myself included) and have found that the amount of money/work/time involved in installing one does not justify the small increase in power.
IMO, after running one for some time and moving on to bigger and better things, either stick with the k03s and run meth, or step up to t3s60. There is no need for an in-between-turbo here.

Re: FV-QR (Morbidgrass)

^the 3071R is not really a good alternative for someone considering a k04-001; a lot needs to be done to get the engine up to par in order to safely handle the power that turbo can produce.
A nice BT alternative to a k04-001 (one with similar spool characteristics, can be run on a stock motor safely, and will leave plenty of room for future growth) is a T3s60 or T3 60 trim. Check out arnold at pagparts' kit:

for $3125, you get everything you need to install it, including charge piping, software, and injectors. This turbo can produce around 275whp-300whp (with a much broader torque curve over the k04), and should not require anything more than the standard intercooler/exhasut that the k04 would need. In fact, you can even use your stock clutch since you have an 02m.
The price for a k04-001 setup can run from $1700 for the APR kit (no manifold, stock injectors) to $2200 for a GIAC setup (running the high flow mani, new injectors and MAF, etc). Oh, and you'll need a new TIP to run the k04 so you'll have to tack that on in the end as well.
After all is said and done, you'll spend a few grand and a weekend or two installing it, only to really not be able to tell a difference between this and what you had before.
Take it for what its worth, as i'm speaking from personal experience

It's really pretty silly to think 1200 and 3100 is "close".
if you already have apr software its only $200 for the ko4 software, grab a ko4 from CTSTURBO for 975 or so with install kit. You're good to go...i wouldn't go with the manifold as there is known spiking issues with it.

Re: (1ThumbPhotog)

The point is, you can spend $1200-$2200 and 10 hours of labor for nothing, or $3100 and 10 hours of labor for something. If you are only after the 10-15whp extra the k04-001 is capable of, then go buy a WAI kit or some race fuel and be happy. If you are looking for a noticeble increase in performance, then save your pennies and get the T3s60.
Spending the time and money on installing a k04-001 on a k03s-equipped car just does not make sense; just use that money to buy hookers/drugs/etc as those things have a much better pleasure-to-cost ratio

FV-QR

I've read that those smaller turbos spool so fast that they have the potential to be more dangerous to your engine than a larger one when pushing more boost. Although a larger turbo will produce much more HP they power curve is much smoother. You'd still prob have to do something about your clutch though.

Most are fine keeping wheel torque under 300wtq. Anything over and you are pushing it on stock internals.
As for the clutch, I've been running a 28RS for over a year now without issue on mine. They have been known to hold 350+wtq for years without a problem.
Nonetheless, both the k04 and the T3s60 produce similar torque numbers (its just that the T3s60 produces it a tad later in the rev range and holds it for much longer), therefore both will have a similar effect on the drivetrain. If one's going to pop your block or destroy your clutch, they both will

Re: (black maqic20th)

Both arnold@pagparts or clay@cts-turbo can hook you up if that's the route you wish to take. You should know, however, that the cost increase from a lil journal bearing T3s60 to a DBB GT2871R with rods is substantial to say the least. Not only is the turbo $500 more expensive, but the parts-only cost of installing rods can be close to $700-$800 when all is said and done.
