The embodiment of what our English cousins like to call a "crap car". The tires are nicely round, and hold air well, and the window glass is unusually transparent. You see, even the worst cars have something praiseworthy about them!

The Morris Marina is a car manufactured by the Morris division of British Leyland throughout the 1970s, a period of great turbulence and difficulty for the British car industry. It was known in some markets as the Austin Marina, Leyland Marina, and Morris 1.7.
The model has been widely identified as symptomatic of the problems facing the industry at that time, with poor build quality, handling likened to a "skip on wheels"[2] and outdated design. The 1980 replacement for the Marina, the closely related Ital, received similar criticism. The Marina has been described as one of the worst cars of all time, although it was one of the most popular cars in Britain throughout its production life]

I think to the Top Gear guys it emphasizes all that was wrong with England's car industry at the time. It lacked innovation, quality, performance, and wasn't good to drive. Basically everything the TG presenters like in cars.

then why do they have a fan club?

I'm only aware of an Owners Club, not strictly the same thing. It's the British way, to love an underdog.
There are owner/fan clubs for all kinds of unlikely and undeserving machinery.

European Vega?

Vega had some redeeming quality.
Nearest comparable American car I can think of is Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare... absolutely nothing worked right as designed + shoddy construction quality + underwhelming mechanical underpinning + iffy and forgettable styling (Vega at least had styles to spare) + horrendous reliability record = unloved turd

I drove a 76 Aspen for a couple years and you're absolutely right.
