Re: Seriously thinking of 2007 Mercedes CLK350... school me a bit? (1SICKLEX)

I kinda agree but the 3.5 is the newer engine. The V-8 was the older 5.0 liter. I don't think there was a CLK 550 with the newer V-8....
Though overall, I have to agree, go with the 500 AMG sport...if you can.

There is a clk550 but even with the older engine the clk500 is still a 5.2 0-60 13.7 sec. car, the CLK350 is not nearly as quick. Also I like going with the last iteration of the older engine, as usually all the bugs have been worked out.

My aunt had a transmission on her '05 CLK500 go out at around 30,000 miles. Other than that it's been relatively problem free.
I'd get the extended warranty though. My extended family has had almost every recent Mercedes series in some version or another except for the SLR, G, M, and GLK. Let's just say that warranty will come in handy.

If it is a CPO car with extended warranty then it's ok. Paying E class money for C class coupe is not my idea of a great deal no matter what... but they are plush and comfortable cruiser for people interested in the 3 point star.

That is not an entirely correct assessment, they are more of a hybrid between the e/c class. Basically they use an extensively modified version of the smaller chassis of the C, yet use many of the components off the E. Not entirely unlike your S4, which is A6 money for an A4.
Your statement is implying the only reason people purchase the CLK is for the star and the car doesn't stand on its own merits. Before I purchased mine, I had no interest in them because of the image they projected. It wasn't until I test drove over 10 different cars in many different classes(including an S4) , the CLK stood out as driving and feeling better to me, that I purchased it in spite of the star. It has a brilliant ride/handling compromise, feeling luxurious while cruising yet seriously planted with tail happy fun when hustled.
