I just 'finished' my scirocco build finally!! Actually, I just got to turn the key and start the new built engine for the first time yesterday. But, I seem to be having running issues that really don't make any sense to me, and I am far to frustrated to keep dealing with it on my own. Are there any scirocco guys that know their **** near by?!? I have tons of stock parts and what not I could trade for your time

Re: Any guru's near Templeton, MA?? (rocco 4.5)

EVERYTHING is new. I expected it start right up and be perfect. But it seems like it over heats. I turn it off before it can, so I'm not sure. I could really use someone who knows more than I do to take a look.

Why do you think it's overheating? Is it the temp gauge goes to high or are you seeing steam out of the overflow tank?
The more info you give us the better we are able to diagnose the problem.

The temp gauge is going too high. So I do not know for sure that it IS overheating. I just won't continue to let my brand new engine run when the dash needle rises so much. But the header glows also. It COULD all be attributed to ignition timing and air/fuel. But I know I'm close on both counts and don't think things would be this bad if it's that simple. Tomorrow I'm getting a timing light, compression test, and leak down test.

I don't have a temp gun. But if I did what do I do, just point it at the block?? Fan has not come on yet. BUT, if I just have a faulty gauge, and the engine isn't really as hot as it says it is, I could be shutting it down before the fan has a chance to come on. Also, I went through this exact situation with another engine last yr. I replaced the entire cooling system. I have 1yr old, radiator, fans, thermo time switch, thermostat, water pump, and no leaks. Last yr the problem turned out to be burnt piston rings and intake valve seals. Wish I remembered that vortexers' name, address, number, etc. I just did a compression test and got 150 across. So, now what?!? The exhaust is all new as well. POSSIBLY it somehow got clogged over the winter . . .

Re: (rocco 4.5)

Sitting over the winter it can get clogged with the most interesting things, like small rodents and their nests,

Re: (tmechanic)

Very true. My argument is this; My 1986.5 scirocco had the stock exhaust on it for 20yrs! That little, very restrictive exhaust with muffler, resonator, cat, downpipe and cast manifold, didn't clog over the course 2 decades. The last 4 1/2 yrs it sat it at the end of a driveway without ever being touched in any way. But now, my 1 yr old, 4-2-1 ceramic header, high flow cat, 2 1/4 stainless to straight through supersprint muffler is clogged?!? Just seems extremely unlikely is all. BUT, there aren't many other possibilities

Re: (rocco 4.5)

Well there are other possibilities. But first I would start it up and check the exhaust and do you feel the exhaust coming out? If not, it could be the cat is plugged. Also, timing being off will cause glowing header and overheating. I had a tensioner go on a GTI years ago and the factory manifold glowed quite well. Much easier for the header to glow. If it were me I would check these two things first.
