Cleaned the pump off but forgot to run it before I headed to the library to use the computer. So...I think the leak might be coming from the top cover, in which case I'll try the ATF fluid as a temporary fix. The leak might just as well be coming from the triangular shaped cap screw that is just about in the center of the pump, facing frontwards. If the latter is the case, can I try tightening it?

Re: leaky injection pump 1985 jetta (giunta)

There is plenty already said on this site about leaky injection pumps.
Use the search function and the words "leaky injection pump"
It has not yet happened to my 1986 but some attribute the problem to the current low sulfur diesel fuel but a rich blend of biodiesel will more certainly affect inj pump seals in older VW diesels. I have had no problem with added biodiesel to make a 1% blend. It is possible that some diesel vendors use biodiesel to replace the lost pump lubricant formerly inherent in older, higher sulfur diesel fuel.

If you are talking about the triangle plug in the center of the 4 fuellines you won't be able to tighten it with vice grips. It's torqued on there, you would need to make a special socket. I high doubt that tightening that one would stop a leak though.
