I might be working on Nantucket Island this summer, and if I am my dropped GTI is not the ideal beach vehicle. So, I've been looking at picking up a cheap 4x4, and I love Jeeps. The Jeep Commanche (XJ pickup) seems pretty cheap, and having had an '84 Cherokee I know they're bulletproof. But, I can't find any 4x4 examples...did the truck ever come with 4WD? Thanks!

The majority of their products have multiple drivetrain options, and many of them were/are available in 2wd form.

Re: Jeep Commanche: Did it come in 4WD? (MartijnGizmo)

martijn, those are fun but don't work well in 6" deep sand. when I say beach drive, I mean hour-and-half treks out to great point, in deep dry sand. our old cherokee never got stuck to the point that it couldn't get itself out, can't say I've got that much confidence in a manx.
Thanks for the info guys, for whatever reason all the ones I've been finding on ebay have been 2wd. gotta find a 4.0L 5-spd 4x4 longbed for under $3000 and I'll be happy

Most of the ones I see are 4 wheel drive, I rember when I was in like 6th grade my neigbors dad had a cool black one that was really sweet. The one you posted the pic of is 4 wheel drive, see the dark spots on one spoke of each wheel? That is little 4X4 script that is etched into the wheel.

Here is some more evidence.

So decent offroad-tires are gonna be quite important.....

I do not remember ever seeing a long bed comanche. My neighbor had a 2wd comanche with a 2.5(maybe 2.3) liter 4 cylinder and he used to race it on the dunes. It is important to have 4WD in the sand however with a locker or limited slip rear differential you would rarely need to switch to 4WD. BTW, those comanches look great on 16" ranger rims with 31" tires.
