Those two sell better than you think (end of November year-to-date sales):
Eos: 6,754
Routan: 13,848
GTI: 6,734
Rabbit/Golf/GTI/R32 combined: 13,779
Also, sales is only one factor - profit is more important. You only look at what you and other enthusiasts want - a clear minority that is either not willing or not capable of paying the huge added cost of European labor and the dollar <-> Euro exchange rate.

Tough to really say because these numbers reflect sales based on a huge gov. incentive called *Cash-for-Clunkers* which artificially boosted sales figures across the board.

what bs gizmos were in R32s?

navi and leather?
or aluminum trim?
climatronic?

Partially. Leather, climatronic, DSG, and sunroof. Some of these things can become options, but I wouldn't buy the car if the car came with all this "stuff".

Re: Golf R Official Vortex Poll (VR6VDub172)

The problem with online polls on an enthusiast site is that the sample of people responding to the poll does not represent the population. If it is not a representative sample the integrity of the results will be questionable.

The results of the poll is not in-line with the current buying trends where automatics are outselling manuals by a substantial margin. One of the few sporty cars that I know of that has a reasonable demand for a manual is the 135i, and regardless, the sales are split right down the middle at approximately 50:50. Considering that BMW is using a plain old slushbox the outcome may have been different if a dual clutch transmission was available.
I think a manual transmission should be made available along with the DSG unit but it would be a travesty if the final configuration is decided using the results of a overly simplified poll.
I personally think the vortex poll will be very useful in determining how the first batch of cars should be optioned-out as we will be the fist in line to take delivery.

Everyone knows this going in... the truth is, VWoA is fully aware that this site is comprised of a wide mix of MT and DSG enthusiasts... they will judge the results as a representation of the DSG's success among the loyalists regardless of what they are currently driving... but so far they must be very disappointed with the results. See they know that most here have the knowledge, skill, and comprehension to appreciate their engineering efforts. They now know that most here are rightfully uneasy about the current version of the DSG regardless of the numbers... it's that simple. I only pray that this kicks VWAG where it counts to design and build a better, more dependable DCT in the next generation DSG... we'll see.

The purpose of my post was to show that the Eos and Routan are, in fact, not duds (as claimed) but sell about as well (or as poorly) as the GTI and Rabbit/Golf/GTI/R32 combined, respectively. As to absolute sales: VW sold almost twice as many Eos in the previous year - so the cash-for-clunkers certainly didn't help, there.

You are at it again. Twisting an opinion you have into a claimed fact.
Many enthusiasts are purists when it comes down to transmission choice. Now, that is a simple truth.

Ya know after driving my Tig around today, I think I realized it's not the sequential only shifting and lack of clutch control that kills me with an auto, it's just the speed and crispness of a manual that I miss.
Launch control gives plenty of oomph off the line and paddle shifters would be nice to have when racing around town and in traffic. I voted for manual but I really don't care what tranny the R comes in.
I do however want 4 doors. I don't know if I could do a 2 door again. I'm way over it.

should also consider that other R thread floating around - who WOULD buy the 2 door if the 4 door weren't available and who WOULD buy the 4 door if the 2 door weren't available...
Generally speaking, there are people who CANT buy a 2 door, but people who are interested in the 2 door would still buy the 4 door. I would think.

The results of this poll by Jamie (which I based my post on) is NOT an "opinion", but a FACT.... it's there in black and white. So where's the "twist"? That's why I said... "They (meaning VWoA) now know that most here are rightfully uneasy about the current version of the DSG regardless of the numbers... it's that simple." This is so easy, even a simpleton should understand it.

But if you're trying to suggest that thousands of malfunctioning DSG's worldwide has had NO affect on this poll..... well... I beg to differ.. and it's time for those who think otherwise to grow up and get over it because it is a fact... 2010 DSG's are still failing... I just helped a buddy get out of his brand new 2010 CC 2.0T/DSG.. VW installed a new MU after only 10 days of ownership... it made it worse! They refunded all his money... every red cent.
That said, I will be among the first to buy the new R in 2 door, Manual 6Speed, Rec seats, (if they can figure out how to put the air bags in them without screwing up their looks), and in std. trim... something to keep the weight down.... all the glitz of the previous R I don't need.... speed and tossing agility is where it's at for me.... damn, I'll even go for manual cranking door windows and no sunroof if that's what it takes to keep weight (and costs) down... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
