will have some pics tomorrow, i was just taking it around the block to keep the battery charged and make me happy, when i started to smell a awful burning plastic smell. i was just two blocks away from my house and the car started to spudder and i noticed flames coming out the side of the hood. luckly someone close by had a fire extingiusher and i put it out, the battery looks like to be the colperate, the + side looks completly melted and above it looks like a fuel line rupture. there goes my hopes of driving it anytime soon. the damage looks minimal but i really dont trust the cis fuel system. whats the next best thing?

did the batt posts happen to contact the hood resulting in a short?
nobody wants to be victim of a car-b-cue...specially a scirocco.
CIS fuel system is dead nuts FWIW...don't blame it w/o isolating other possible causes.
waiting for pics.

Always carry a Fire extinguisher in a Scirocco......just because. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
Look for the hotspot,or the origin of the fire, whether it be fuel related or electrical.Did one of the braided lines spray?,was the wiring sketchy to begin with?,ect....
De-grease engine compartment, trace wires and re-place toasted components.
Probably an electrical issue,(you described plastic smell),as you got the fire out fairly quickly by the sounds of it,I think if it may have been a fuel issue, there would be more damage.
Check grounds/voltages and whatnot when replacing and going through the system.
Good luck with getting her back up and running.

I should invest in a car fire extinguisher- I am unable to bolt down my car battery and I never thought about it bouncing up and sparking against the hood. I've just been focusing on everything else as far as getting it to run better even though it is drivable.
I'm glad you were as fortunate as you are, that under hood fire could have been much worse im sure.

On my way to work I see a lady pulled over, with smoke coming from under her hood, so I stop to help. Long story short. She had put a battery in this car and it wasn't bolted down. This started a fire under the hood and before we could get the hood open the passenger tire was on fire. The car was a total loss. The fire department finally came and put the fire out but the fire had already spread to the interior. The cops came and found out that the lady had also swapped the tags from another car and this car didn't have any insurance. It wasn't her lucky day...she ended up with 4 tickets. I felt sorry for her and thought that the cop could have cut her some slack but he didn't.

Ok..so let me parse down thru this;
30 year old fuel line(s) not maintained or changed.
Poor understanding of 12V electrics and no battery terminal covers.
Most likely some stupid stereo wiring or somesuch unfused at the battery. No fire extinguisher or battery cut-off switch.
Yup, you can really see how it's the CIS system that's at fault.
The most robust and reliable fuel injection system EVER devised by man....yup that's gotta be it.....couldn't be the OWNER....nah!

Darwinism applies to Scirocco's too.
