Is the official 'VW automatic transmission oil' a rebranded version of dextron or mercon? I'd rather not drive all the way to the dealership just to get transmission oil, so if there is a safe reliable substitute, I'd love to know about it.

i'd like to get in on this topic aswell, im in the process of a tranny replacement and will be needing to replace the tranny oil and filter...
dealer wants $23/l and said i need 9L, people told me that i'll be good with 7-8l's.
i'm just looking for a lil more affordable option if there is any
VW ATF is not rebranded Mercon, Dexron etc. You only need to pick up 4 liters if you are only dropping the pan and changing the filter. Of those 4 liters, you'll really only *need* 3 to maybe 3.5 liters to fully fill the pan after service. I personally only use VW ATF in my VW transmissions-it's $19 a liter, expensive, but then I know I have the right fluid in the trans.
Its just safer to use OEM VW fluid. It may be more expensive, but it will save you from a prematurely fried transmission down the road. Other fluids can also cause all sorts of other little problems from slipping to shifting problems. Trust me, the extra money is worth it.

Do not forget to fill the differential on
01M/096 units. These have a separate
sump from the ATF.
Use 80-90 synthetic gear lube. Fill and
check location is the driven speedometer
gear. Gear lube should be visible on half
of the driven gear tooth.
Aftermarket fluid preference is partial
synthetic ATF. Dexron III with an additive may
be sufficient. VW/Audi fluid tends to varnish
easily at higher operating temperatures.
01M/01N/01P ATF level: Remove oil pan
plug, fill at the cap just above pan rail
until fluid comes out pan tube.
High transmission fluid temperatures:
Sonnax suggests the elimination of the OE
antifreeze to ATF cooler mounted on the
transmission.
All computer codes must be cleared
before rebuilt valve body or transmission
is test driven.
I have been having trouble with my 01m so I found a company online that sells the rebuilt valve body using that kit. They where the best price I could find, $399. And only $69 for the wiring harness for the solenoids. http://www.centralvalvebodies.com/
